Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort (2014)

Redundant and unnecessary.

Great Film overall

The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

Now, when I first settled down to watch Wrong Turn 6, I wasn't expecting anything flashy; I was just expecting more gore than what was necessary, and some weirdness with the inbred cannibals. What I did not expect was the long unnecessary and plain confusing plot line, that did the film no justice. The acting in this was well done, but I feel that the characters were weakly written. None of this felt real. After watching Wrong Turn 1- 3, these characters just feel so flimsy and two dimensional, there's nothing about them that makes me care that they're being killed off. They were just props for the cannibals and that is really disappointing, especially after in Bloodlines, having such a strong set of characters.The timing of this one is really confusing. The films 4-6 are meant to come before the timing in 1-3, but yet... the characters have GoPros, they have smart phones, they have all this technology, that wasn't even available within the technology time of the first three films. I know that it was rumoured that this film was meant to be after 1-3, so the film order goes 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6, but this was not done clearly enough, and to anyone with a little bit of lore to the whole story of Wrong Turn, it was really confusing and very off putting.The only reason this has gotten three stars from me is that of the make up. The special effects make up was done really well; of course, there are parts that could have been done better, as with every film that uses special effects make up, but that was really the only reason I didn't stop watching the film. The effects were good, and that's the only reason this is highly rated from me. If the effects weren't as good, this would only be a one star rating.From a horror fan, and someone who has loved Wrong Turn for a while, I would recommend just watching the first three films, four and five at a stretch. Forget this one exists; it's really not worth the time to sit and watch it. Wish I could have that time back to watch the first film again. A shame. This had real potential. It just turned into a cash monkey.

The fact that Wrong Turn became a franchise in the first place is baffling, not that I'm complaining. The original was essentially The Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets The Hills Have Eyes, and it was great for what it was, but hardly original enough to warrant the franchise treatment. Then it got an action-packed, direct-to-video sequel featuring Henry Rollins kicking all sorts of inbred cannibal ass, and it was awesome. Then the sequels kept coming and coming; Wrong Turn 4 has some merit in its own trashy sort of way, but 3 and 5 are among the worst "films" ever made. So going into Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort, you know not to expect top shelf cinema. But at the very least, you hope for some camp value, gratuitous nudity, and brutal kills.Wrong Turn 6 tries something unique to the franchise, though: a psychological angle. It's a story about a guy who inherits a large mansion from an unknown relative, and the mansion turns out to be the home and breeding grounds for the grotesque inbred cannibals we've come to know and love. The psychological aspect comes into play with the mansion's caretakers, distant relatives to the protagonist, and how they gradually lure him away from the reality that he once knew, represented by his oblivious group of friends, and eventually seduce him into their demented family culture. It's quite disturbing actually, and there are plenty of wince-inducing scenes here. The problem is the writing, directing, and acting - the bare necessities for a good film.The dialogue is horrendous; sadly, not in a so-bad-it's-funny sort of way. Things aren't much better acting-wise. It's not like great actors could have done much with a script like this, but these people are so unconvincing in their performances that the dialogue-driven scenes become downright aggravating to sit through. The sole exception is Sadie Katz as the caretaker Sally, who gives an unsettlingly sensual conviction to her character. She's by far the most alluring part of the film and deserves props for adding some credibility to the otherwise irredeemably bland cast. In regards to the directing, it can feel like you're watching a soft-core porn in one scene and then a graphic, torture-porn ridden snuff film in another. This may be due to the writing, but there's not even an attempt at building suspense. It just transitions from scene to scene with no regard to consistency in tone, pacing, or atmosphere; until finally, the movie ends.Again, there are admittedly great ideas buried under the disastrous execution. The plot is a nice change of pace for the series, the deaths are gruesome, and the ending is no doubt unnerving. Sadly, Wrong Turn 6 is bereft of production value, and the subject matter is too bleak to be enjoyed in a campy, fun way. It's a dreary exercise in gratuity; from the glorious nudity to the grisly gore, it's all shock and no awe. If you've seen the previous five installments, you might as well watch this one - it's a hell of a lot better than 5. But don't go in hoping for a return to the schlocky entertainment value of 2 or the genuine terror of the original because you sure as hell won't find either in Wrong Turn 6.

I know I am a little late in submitting my comments to this latest (to date) entry in the WRONG TURN series, though considering how bad the previous entry was, you might understand my reluctance to continue with this series. But today I finally did, and my pre- viewing feelings that I was not missing anything proved to be correct. There are many things that go wrong with this entry, and most of them have to do with the sorry script. For starters, there are a whole bunch of unanswered questions, ranging from why the lead protagonist had been put up for adoption to why his family members needed him for their big plan in the first place when they had each other to work with. The story is also poorly paced - as others here have noted, you have to wait until the last fifteen or so minutes before most of the protagonists find themselves in deep poop. (There is a LOT of padding in this movie.) The protagonists, incidentally, are all obnoxious and unlikable to a large degree. As for the bad guys, for some reason the screenplay has Three Finger and his two partners in murder moved to become secondary characters.So you may be wondering why I somehow found this entry better than the sorry part 5. Well, there are a few good touches to be found in this mess if you're patient. For starters, the movie looks a lot better than the cheap and cheesy previous entry - it looks more expensive, with some decent locations and sets. The movie also has a good dash of gratuitous sex and nudity. And there are some nice gory bits, most of it thankfully accomplished with old school special effects instead of unconvincing CGI effects. All this makes the movie a little more bearable than part 5... though I feel I should make clear that the movie overall still isn't very good. If 20th Century Fox does get around to making a part 7, I'm going to skip it unless I hear a LOT of good reports about it.

First and foremost I am a huge fan of B-movie horror. I am especially quite a fan of slasher/cannibal/human nature type movies. Acting is never my first priority with these types of film. Rather I look at content and pace. And of course, especially with these types of movies, gore and sexuality/nudity. So I must admit I was thoroughly pleased with Wrong Turn 6. Absolutely my favorite of the series. I especially love that we find out the how and why of the inbreeding. Also we are given a story that allows us plenty of gory deaths and sexual situations. It even throws in a curve ball. Just when you think the lead actor will escape or turn away from the clan, he doesn't. No, he embraces it. And in turn consummates with his awesomely hot sister. A must watch movie in my opinion. Oh, if only they all delivered as well as this one did.
