I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.

if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

Isabelle 'Bird' Morgan (Ella Ballentine) is visiting her parents' grave when a masked assassin comes out of the woods to stage a massacre. Bird is hidden and photographs the killer Sade (Laurence Fishburne) unmasked. He chases her into Carter Green (Thomas Jane)'s home. It's a standoff as Sade is unwilling to let Bird live. Carter is upstairs with a quail gun and only one shell. He is also haunted by his own tragic loss. The setup is OK but I'm not sure about Sade being so nonchalant with his mask off. It makes little sense that he spends the time covering the grave. He should have been setting up a fire in the house when Carter makes that nice move with the film. There are things that could have ratcheted up the tension. Carter could have set his own fire as a warning signal. Instead of action, this becomes more of a back and forth stage play. The intensity never really takes off although it simmers at a good low boil.

Carter (Thomas Jane), a troubled veteran, gets a chance at redemption by protecting a 12 year-old girl from an assassin (Laurence Fishburne) after she witnesses a murder. Holding a shotgun with a single shell, he engages in physical and psychological warfare in a desperate fight for the girl's life. Standoff is one of those films that you rent and you basically spend your time on seeing and you probably are thinking that it's going to suck but it turns out to be an amazing drama, thriller action movie about 2 guys and a little girl that have stucked in a house and it's basically Panic Room all over again except there's no Room that you can hide into. Let me start by saying that the performances in this film were terrific especially Laurence Fishburne i mean his character was very interesting and there's so many great quotes coming from him plus even a pretty good backstory, Thomas Jane was also really good and his performance was very down to Earth plus his backstory was also very touching and then we have this little girl called Bird played by Ella Ballentine who does an extremely well done job. What i loved about the film is that it's not your typical dumb straight to DVD movie because it actually tries to flash out it's characters, it tries to give them backstories and it's never becoming boring or just bad it's just very fun and thrilling from start to finish plus the end credits song was amazing and fit really well with the overall plot of the movie. Overall Standoff was one of the biggest surprises i have ever seen in a Straight to DVD Film with some terrific performances, a well done Drama that is going to keep you on the edge of your seats.

I was on the fence about seeing this film, but I'm glad I did. First of all I have to say i completely disagree with the negative reviews for this movie. After all, the reason we go see movies is to escape reality and come out with a different perspective on life (or we should anyway) than try to figure out if the plot or premise of a film is believable or not. Star Wars or Star Trek don't have a believable premise either but we love to watch'em. This movie, although completely different than a Sci-Fi film, is well worth watching from a psychological point of view alone. People make films. And just like people, all films have flaws even the high budget theatrical releases. I watched this film before I even knew it was a strictly video release and the director was popping his cherry for the first time. But considering either of these, I have to give credit where credit is due and say this movie was really good. It was more positive than negative that's for sure.

As a fan of Thomas Jane and Lawrence Fishburne, I wanted to like this movie. However, what seemed to be pitched as a battle of wits turned into an hour and half screaming match between the two actors. The movie is basically Jane attempting to keep a little girl from being killed by Fishburne with his last shotgun shell. The two of them spend the whole movie yelling insults and cursing at each other, with very little happening in between. The script tries to add some story by telling giving Jane's character a tragic backstory, but it really doesn't do much to keep the plot moving. The best part of the movie is the little girl. Ella Ballentine has some definite talent, and finding out what happens to her is the only reason to finish watching the movie. This young actor adds a weariness and "old soul" quality to her character that makes her seem wiser beyond her years. While pitched as a battle of wits, this is more of a pissing contest between two stubborn men. If that's your thing, then go for it.
