This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

I love Star Trek whether it be for its great characters, different worlds, alien species and the variety of adventures, it makes for an enthralling sci-fi franchise. 10 years after the original show's cancellation, fans were treated to a feature film which saw the return of their favourite characters. While nostalgic they were disappointed by its slow pace. When I first saw this as a kid it bored the hell out of me so I often dismissed this and went straight to Wrath of Khan. However I found there are some fans who argue the movie is underrated so I was interested to rewatch it. While I found more enjoyment out of it the second time round, I found it to have serious pacing issues. The movie oddly enough starts with an overture which I found bizarre for a movie from this time. However, Jerry Goldsmith delivers a fantastic score which makes the slow moments slightly bearable. It also likes to dwell and linger on special effects which I'm presuming was done to show the advancement in technology since the original show. While there's great model work and some impressive optical work it doesn't progress the story in an engaging way. I know some people would argue this isn't Star Wars so don't expect an exciting action packed movie, but even the episodes from the original show weren't sluggish to this extent. The script is very minimal and the film feels more like a reunion and special effects showcase then a fully fledged Star Trek adventure.

This movie is completely nonsensical and ridiculous. The absurdity begins with Commander Sonak being introduced as the Enterprise's new science officer shortly before suffering a gruesome death in a creepy ass transporter effect. Later as the Enterprise departs the solar system, they just happen to do so during a rare alignment of all the planets. Almost immediately, the Enterprise gets caught in the only wormhole in the Star Trek universe with a quantum level oscillation delay effect, but they escape by blowing up an asteroid within it. When the Enterprise encounters the cloud, it somehow becomes the only vessel who's shields withstand a blast of its plasma energy. Moments before the second plasma torpedo hits, it simply vanishes after the Enterprise transmits linguacode. Once the enterprise enters the cloud, it gets stopped by a giant sphincter which puckers up every few seconds, It is then that Spock discovers that with just a blank stare on his face and not even looking at his monitors, he can gather facts not only about V'ger, but an entire mechanical civilization on the other side of the galaxy as well. At the end when V'Ger's true nature is revealed, the audience is treated to a series of loud fart-like sounds every time an absurd plot twist is revealed while Kirk looks around as if wondering where they came from. The purpose for those ugly belt devices the crew wears is never explained either, but I imagine they are "reward" devices similar to the one in Suburban Commando.Despite all its flaws, annoyances and the fact that it's an obvious rip-off of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is still much more watchable than any of the Next Generation or reboot films. The original cast always had great chemistry and the special effects combined with the orchestral music is relaxing to watch, even if it does drag the movie on far too long.

I expected much more from this first "Star Trek" movie. The time was right to make this film after the television show became successful eventually. However, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is a big disappointment in my opinion. There isn't enough plot, there isn't much action, the film is too long and the tedium really stretches. It is good to see all the original cast members once again but surely a better film could have been made for them? The special effects may look good - which they do - but a film needs more than that (shades of how films tend to be these days).

Below average acting (probably from everyones experience with the animated series) and waaaaaay too much dialogue. The strange plot surrounding a massive vessel called the intruder doesn't help either. This has the distinction of being one of the most boring movies ever made.
