This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Starting out I didn't know how to take this movie. The senior police detective is out planting evidence, his belligerent sidekick routinely beats and tortures suspects, and people brought in for questioning admit to crimes they're completely innocent of. It's all very disorienting and doesn't make a lot of sense until about the second half of the movie when the detectives hunker down and involve themselves in routine but exhausting police work.Regarding planted evidence, feeble minded suspect Kwang-ho (No-shik Park) might have been able to out Detective Park (Kang-ho Song) for his dishonest methods if he'd been able to differentiate the underside of his left foot sneaker with the picture the detective showed him of a right shoe footprint. If you go back and check that scene, you'll see that the physical shoe couldn't have made the print in the 'evidence'. The correct sneaker would have made a reverse image print in the dirt. It's kind of ironic actually that the big break in the case occurs because a lowly female desk officer makes a connection between a sad song played on a radio station and rainy nights when a serial killer's murders occur. This while Detective Park is crystallizing his theory about crazy hairless men (trust me, you have to catch that!).When everything finally comes together and the detective on loan Seo Tae-yoon (Sang-kyung Kim) closes in on the suspected serial killer, the rug is pulled out from under him and the viewer with the information from America that the DNA sample sent in is not conclusive. It points to another irony in as much as Seo's insistence on the infallibility of 'written documents' is torn to shreds. At that point, one feels helpless over Park Hyeon-gyu's (Hae-il Park) get away, since most of the circumstantial evidence pointed to him as the killer.I didn't know this film was about a real life serial killer case that went unsolved in South Korea in the Nineties. In fact, I didn't even know about the picture until I ran across it on one of the IMDb top film lists. Fortunately, I'm glad I kept an open mind enough despite the dubious outset, because the story turned out to be a provocatively intriguing one, even if no resolution occurred as a result. The closing scene inspires closure and doubt at the same time, a unique conclusion to a murder mystery that remains unsolved in real life.

A serial killing movie where the detectives try to catch the killer but every time they failed & get confused about the murderer. they catch some suspect & start questioning. when you'll watch this movie you probably think that every suspect can be the killer according to their behavior & answers. the main two lead roles acted amazingly. their natural acting will touch your heart & the cinematography will make you think about re-watching this masterpiece. this is a slow paced movie where the story slowly get paced & you'll see the characters will blossom & disappear like flowers, that's what made this movie a masterpiece. at the end of the show you'll question yourself & think about this movie whole day. this is just brilliant ! i give it 10/10.

1986. In a rural district of South Korea, two women have been recently raped and murdered. Working on the case are detectives Park Doo-man and Cho Yong-koo. Their efforts are impeded by some sloppy crime scene procedure by the police. Their methods of solving cases are also quite basic, essentially amounting to beating confessions out of suspects. All this leads to nothing and the police chief brings in a more sophisticated and intelligent detective from Seoul, Seo Tae-yoon. With his arrival the methods improve but they still don't have the killer. Then another woman is found murdered and a pattern emerges...Gripping drama from writer-director Joon-ho Bong. Intriguing from the start, and the intrigue ramps the more you get into it. Gritty, realistic and certainly doesn't glamorize detective work - so many red herrings and dead ends!Quite funny at times too. The methods of the local detectives are sometimes very farcical and the director makes the most of these moments of comedy.Very powerful and thought-provoking ending. As with the remainder of the plot, not at all predictable or formulaic.Solid performances, especially from the two leads, Kang-ho Song and Sang-kyung Kim.

The movie was well scripted and genuine to the audience. The story is all about investigating the rape and murders in a specific region. It depicts how police investigate, superficially and unprofessionally, in those rural regions. If someone is a Sherlock Holmes fan, then they will be utterly disappointed. If there is a Sherlock Holmes in reality and sees this movie, he would be plucking his hairs for the way police investigated the case. The movie just illuminate the pathetic investigation all through the story. But then again the story was real and you don't wonder why the serial rapist/killer is not caught at all. If there was a studious investigator in reality, he would have finished the case a long ago with his meticulous scientific inquiry. Nevertheless, I really recommend the movie for how the depict the reality of investigation and how they approach the criminals. I definitely recommend to those psychopathic serial killer movie lovers ;)
