Better Late Then Never

I will still openly admit that I'm not a fan of Kevin Hart, his comedy just doesn't do anything for me. However, I'm always open to new opportunities that may alter my thoughts on his humour. Unsurprisingly, this film doesn't do that. A rookie police cadet who spends most of his time gaming joins his girlfriend's brother, who is an experienced officer, for a day of training to get some experience. Essentially a comedic imitation of 'Training Day', just one that isn't very funny...or humorous at all. Yet another American comedy where I did not smile, chuckle, laugh out loud or snigger. I was my usual emotionless self. The comedic moments come from the juxtaposing personalities of Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, who's onscreen chemistry felt incredibly natural together, where the latter is supposed to provide the laughs with his hyperbolic body language and high-pitched shouting. It just does nothing for me. Just Hart being Hart, in every single film he is in. Cube on the other hand is more likely to get a smile from me due to his natural deadpan delivery of the shoddy dialogue that was provided. The screenplay was uninspired as it solely strolls down the route of racial stereotypes and "oh, you're black so you act like this" and so forth. Unoriginality at its most obvious. The plot itself was a generic forgettable ball of nothingness that only became established during the third act. What I will say is the last thirty minutes were enjoyably watchable, the action is elevated with some buoyancy and committed combat choreography from its actors although edited haphazardly with quick cuts aplenty. The pace moves along at a steady rate and never dips to boring levels, but the aura of mediocrity that surrounds the action "comedy" just cannot be ignored. No laughs however certainly watchable. Just, it's a ride that I don't necessarily want to be part of again. Maybe the sequel can entice me into appreciating Hart's humour...(yeah, right).

Simply because they would not be interesting. "Ride Along" is an American 100-minute movie from 2 years ago directed by Tim Story and starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube as the main characters. The story is about a man who has a girlfriend, but does not really get along with her brother. The man himself is an officer, but already struggles with keeping a handful of students under control while his soon-to-be brother-in-law is a tough and very successful cop. The film is listed on IMDb with several genres, but I cannot take it seriously as anything other than an action comedy. The dramatic elements are there, but they get entirely destroyed by the ridiculous crime story in here. Of course, that would not be a problem if the film didn't take itself seriously from the crime genre perspective on some occasions. But it does and it is painful to watch. Action genre I don't care too much about, but I guess it was okay from that perspective. Now about the comedy, it was not all bad, there was one scene when they were talking about the phone in the police car and the woman just won't understand Hart's character's message to her. That was kinda funny I guess. But most of the other humor is not really that great. Or at least it is not sufficient in quality and quantity for a 100-minute film.Most of it relies on parallels between the two characters. We see one character be in a dangerous undercover mission early on, another plays a video game that is about police and crime. Or on another occasions, one questions a criminal, the other questions a child. Stuff like that. In general, a lot of the action are dialogs that take place between the two protagonists in the police car. I guess they did it to save a little money there, but it may have been too many scenes there. It got a bit repetitive, even if the funniest scene, the one I mentioned earlier, takes place there too. The film's biggest weakness is the script. And again 5 people or so were working on it, which is a complete mystery to me. They can't all be that bad. The fact that the entire thing was so predictable was far from the movie's biggest problem. It was just a failed attempt in most areas regardless what you think of, apart from being entirely unrealistic of course. And still, I guess the film was commercially successful enough to motivate everybody (including director, producers and lead actors) for a second movie as this one came out very recently. And surprise, surprise, it is even less successful in terms of critical reception than this very mediocre first. I honestly have no interest checking out the sequel anytime soon. This first film here occasionally reminded me of a weak version of some older cop movie starring Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte(?). Do not watch "Ride Along". Thumbs down.

went to this movie and it advertised itself as an action comedy and it hits the mark. this movie is filled with many laughs some terrific actions scenes and I was entertained which I feel is the most important part of any movie. the chemistry between the leads is what makes this movie rise above the standard movie in this genre and I laughed at so many scenes like the kevin hart dealing with the various 126 calls along with the hospital scenes and him using his blackhammer schtick. ice cube plays a great straight man to kevin hart's character but I will point out one truly funny scene and that is the scene with kevin hart dealing the young man thinking of skipping school it was a riot. so if you want to just laugh and eat some popcorn this movie is for you.

It just wasn't that funny. The plot was weak at best and rife with clichés. From start to finish it stayed at a consistent mediocre level. For a movie filled with talented and usually hilarious actors I just don't know what happened. It had nothing to do with the fact that the idea has been done to death, the jokes just weren't funny. The characters needed to be more lovable and endearing. It wasn't until the very end that I started to see the chemistry between Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. Too late in my opinion.The strangest thing is that they made a second one of this movie. Who knows maybe it will be better since it seems to have a storyline to carry it.
