Don't Believe the Hype
A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
It's just too long to tell this story.. I mean I don't have to know every detail.. so many times it's going out of the story line and becomes hard to grasp what the hell is going on...It is boring, classical and cliche
Certainly a watchable adaptation of LeCarre's brilliant novel, but this version pales in comparison to the BBC production starring Sir Alec Guinness and an all star supporting cast. Too many changes simply for the sake of putting a personal thumbprint on this version . Why was Peter Guillam gay? Why Hungary and not Czechoslovakia as in the book? While the supporting cast in this version was also star studded, the script was second rate and Gary Olin single handedly carried this poorly crafted production. It's the comparison between the Original version that makes this movie much less than brilliant. Shame.
It was like trying to follow a fart in the wind. Call me old fashioned but I think a movie should have some kick. This wasn't that. It wasn't even a movie. It was a film.
During the first hour, the producers actually managed to give four whole women non-speaking roles - Two blonde, giggling secretaries, one woman who had their head smashed against a window, and one brunette whose naked behind we saw in a sex-scene. Very disappointing.
