While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.

This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.

JR busts out of prison with Brendan Lynch, Australia's most notorious criminal, and joins Lynch's gang for a gold heist that soon pits the two men against one another. Son Of a Gun has a talented and well known Cast but the film's narrative and it's script are terrible when on the same time the characters that we're supposed to care about are boring as hell. JR is a young guy on his first prison stretch, about to encounter harder, tougher, seasoned cons. He doesn't back down though, and this saves him short term but long term, drags him into more serious crime. He is mentored by Brendan who has JR play a pivotal role in his own escape. Brendan takes a shine to JR for reasons we never quite understand, but Brendan sporadically asserts his independence at various crucial junctures. McGregor is an odd fit in this role, more convincing as the philosophical mentor than as the hardened man of violence. The bromance between the two never quite reaches Donnie Brasco levels, part of an overall unevenness in tone. There is a brisk pace and a decent twist at the end. In short, worth watching, but basically an average heist movie and not much else.

Nothing original to this movie overall, but it turned out to be entertaining enough. Australia is doing what the British did about 5 (or so) years ago, entered the American film industry with good solid films.Ewan McGregor (scottish) as Lynch was on point. Brenton Thwaites (Australian) as JR did very well with this character. He is so young and innocent looking in other movies but this one he pulls off a criminal, surprisingly well actually. Also, Alicia Vikander (Sweddish) does okay with her role as well. I remembered watching her recently in "A Royal Affair".

i was a bit worried when i first watched a trailer for this film that it may be cheaply made like some other Australian titles, but gladly i decided to give it ago anyway, and i just want to start by saying i loved this film it had me griped from the moment it started right to the very end. This is not you typical all action shoot em up heist film, instead it is very intelligent and gritty and more what you would expect to happen in real life. i had not heard of any of the actors in this film except from Ewan MacGregor but was surprised at how well everyone played their part. If you are thinking of watching this film then i recommend you give it a go, the only reason i think the film doesn't have a higher rating is because more people wanted a all action film, so stick it on you wont regret it and fingers crossed we see more films like this emerge from Australia
