True-crime writer Ellison Oswald is in a slump; he hasn't had a best seller in more than 10 years and is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery. He moves his own family into the victims' home and gets to work. After several horror websites raved about this movie I was expecting a lot more. I guess the plot was okay but the execution left much to be desired. I get it, horror movies are dark for a reason but when you literally cannot see what is going on it's gone too far. The music was good. There were several parts I just could not see. It did not grasp my attention. Conversely when spooky figures were on screen, they were on screen a LONG time. This is where the quick shots are normally but we got to have a good look at the figures, examine them, and then they continued to stand on screen. The jump scares didn't work because they were only when nothing was happening. If the jump scares were quick shots of the ghost children or whatever the heck they were it probably would have got me. Instead I stared at the screen wondering why dead kids doing the shhh thing is scary in literally every other movie besides this one.

I don't want to give any spoilers.. which is going to be difficult on this one. Home sick and have watched three movies so far...this was the third. It is SCARY AS HELL but one of the DUMBEST plots I have ever seen in a film. It could have been so much more...but it got lost trying to explain EVERY LITTLE THING. The atmosphere is seriously unbelievably thick with tension though. Huge fan of Derrickson and this is by far better than Deliver us From Evil.

Sinister was a very interesting film I love the plot and premise of the film. I bought this film recently cause I love the cover for the DVD and thank god I did. The movie was very original and the cast were good. There is one part that I did not like it when the boy is inside the box and starts yelling that was a let down and typical. Also I don't see why people are saying its a extremely scary film it not just because of the cheap jump scares gimmick well anything that jumps at you when your not looking is scary. Overall I love this film and it is a film worth re watching a lot.

I probably shouldn't have watched this the evening after seeing The Conjuring as there are similarities and that film is a much more confident and fundamentally scary movie. I understand Ethan Hawke was not only very keen to play this role but also recommended Juliet Rylance as his wife. I don't think Hawke is really up to this role which is a difficult one as he has to play by himself for much of the time. Neither do I feel there is any rapport between the two. I did like the unusual score, I loved the opening and closing credits (which really are creepy) and felt that the children were effective. Being an old 8mm buff myself, I much enjoyed the playing with these found films and the whole exciting business of editing. I was also most impressed with the 'Skype' sequences when Hawke gets to hear the views of an eccentric university professor. I thought these scenes were amazingly well done and that the film caught fire during these sequences. If only the whole film could have been run at this same tempo and level of weirdness, because it did have the potential to be as scary as The Conjuring.
