It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.

At the outset of this movie, I loved the premise, a suspenseful thriller with 3 girls kidnapped and having to manage a way to escape a man with over 20 varying personalities. It was an exceedingly interesting concept and as the plot and the character of Kevin developed, it only became more compelling. James McAvoy did an excellent job with one of the more difficult roles imaginable in the film industry. Where this movie faltered, and in a major way, was the ending, in which Kevin becomes "The Beast," a new manifestation of his personality disorder that is essentially a supervillain that his brain has willed into existence. The movie departed from the suspenseful, intense story of a fairly believable character with a split personality disorder into this fantastical horror movie that was bordering on ridiculous. I think that the movie still had enough entertainment value and a compelling enough story to manage a 5/10 but I was entirely disappointed by the decision to wrap this story up with the unleashing of The Beast.

Ironically enough there seems to be a split in the opinions of this movie. I hated it. I thought it was crushingly dull and derivative. Good performance from James McAvoy... but these type of high concept, slightly hammy, chameleon-like roles are bread and butter to a trained actor. It's the sort of setup that drama students practice (not always successfully) Not taking anything away from his performance as it was very good. The movie as a whole was uninteresting to me though. I'm a fan of Anya Taylor-Joy and hopefully she can find better movies that fit her talent, like The Witch in which she was excellent.

Split personality is not only described as a disorder but also the story has been showed in a way that there is always another personality within a human, its just about exploring your self and limits. You are not bound by what you are, you are what you want to be.

Manoj Shayamalan and James Mcavoy deserve oscar for this movie. James played a DID patient with greatest acting skills, Casey Affleck please turn down the oscar to him. Shyamalan has woven a complex world around the James. Screenplay and direction is top notch. It is one of the thrillers where you feel the story. It is sequel to unbreakable, so I'm looking forward for superhero Dunn to fight the Horde and Mr. Glass. Greatest superhero trilogy of our era.
