Based on the one-shot graphic novel of the same name by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignolia, 'Batman: Gotham by Gaslight' leans heavily into the crime genre, highlighting Batman first and foremost as the World's Greatest Detective. Whilst somewhat underplayed in the source material, here the identity of the murderous Jack the Ripper plays a central part in the story's proceedings. As the death toll rises and Gotham's finest come under increasing public pressure, the Bat takes on himself to uncover the truth of who is behind these nefarious deeds.Accompanied by a wealth of voice-acting talent, Bruce Greenwood does an excellent job of capturing the duality of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Similarly, Jennifer Carpenter turns in a great performance as a kinder and, surprisingly, more public-spirited Catwoman. Indeed, the veritable kaleidoscope of DC characters freshly and innovatively represented here begs the question as to whether there is enough new narrative territory to warrant a sequel.Hardcore fan or otherwise, there is much to be enjoyed here in this elseworld retelling of the Batman myth.

That's how it started. Took almost NOTHING from the original comic, save that Jack the Ripper was the villain. And then they made Jim Gordon the Ripper!?Screw that noise. There's not enough hate in the world to express my contempt for this movie.

In every year there are a lot of titles of batman most of them are ok and only few of them are good. i think that this movie was the best one to see in the whole batman animated series since ( under the hood) which was released back away in 2010. I wasn't impressed when i first heard that (Sam Lui ) is going to direct this version because i was so disappointed with both (the killing joke & Harley Quinn), but i must say that he gave us here a brilliant job . what i liked about this film was the story which was totally amazing (changing both the characters and the time events) the animation was also good. and the identity of Jack The Ripper was somehow good ( Even though, it wasn't that difficult to know who really he was) . i know that this was based on a book which was released in 1989, but i'm really hopping to see a sequel of this version.

People seem to miss the point of this one, as they are expecting Batman to have superhuman powers, while forgetting that in the end, he's just a man.Sure the caped crusader is a skilled fighter, but if he'd be all powerful, then it won't be any good to watch. What good is a hero if he can't be in danger? This picture delivers us just enough suspense to make it feel believable. And let's not forget that this is 19th century Gotham, where Batman doesn't have all the usual gadgets that we are used to, and he's not an all skilled, jack of all trades warrior like in the modern setting, where you need superpowers or overwhelming numbers to stand up in a fight with him.The atmosphere in this is great, the pacing is also spot on and the ending is just a little less predictable, where it has left me guessing till the very end toward the reveal of the killers identity. This is a fresh take on Batman, and if you're a DC fan like myself, you should properly enjoy this one, and it's defiantly for a mature audience, so keep your kids away from this one.
