The Sound of Music Live! is a television special that was originally broadcast by NBC on December 5, 2013. Produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the special was an adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical The Sound of Music, starring country singer Carrie Underwood as Maria von Trapp, performed and televised live from Grumman Studios in Bethpage, New York. Meron felt that if the telecast were successful, the concept could become "another kind of entertainment that can exist on TV." By her request, Underwood's casting as Maria was personally endorsed by Julie Andrews, who starred in the 1965 film.

Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.

I'm surprised to see some posts said that it's a live show so it's OK if the performance is not very good. Do you say the same when you go to a Broadway show? I'm not an American and I've never heard of Ms. Underwood or any other actors of the show before, so it's not that I have a prejudice against her or something. But I'm sorry that I must say: poor acting, not very good singing, for Maria and Captain. I couldn't help changing the channel. Even not comparing to the film 1965, the performance is far from good. Maria's voice is OK. She might be a good pop singer, but not good enough to be a Broadway singer. If I were her, I will NEVER take a role Julie Andrews once played. As for the Captain, his voice is not bad, but not good enough to cover his poor acting skill. Seeing him not to know where to put his hands really bothered me. Don't people have to take some acting classes before they act?If you want to do a live show, why not cast it from the Broadway? Is that because they just want some famous people to attract the audience without concerning the quality of the show?

I am so tired of all the negativity on social media. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion but I thought the whole production was terrific and considering it was live with all that could have happened--amazing to me. Carrie Underwood blew me away with her performance of a more innocent Maria than perhaps some of her predecessors. I thought the entire cast including Stephen Moyer were excellent. Carrie had a lot of courage to do this role. Unfortunately we treat movies, theatrical events as sporting events with clear winners and losers. It is indeed possible to like the movie and to like this Broadway production. As Audra McDonald said, no one person owns a role and as she also said on twitter, Carrie Underwood will knock your socks off as their are no socks left on the set. Laura Benanti, Stephen Moyer, Audra McDonald and Christian Borle all spoke highly about Carrie. They all could have underplayed their support but their support was resounding. Please search the internet for Seth Rudetsky talks to Laura Benanti and hear for yourself what Laura says Carrie's performance.

As far as I know this is a live television adaptation of the original stage musical and NOT the film version. I know a lot would not agree with how the show was made but who's to blame? The magnificent voices of the cast brings back memories on how the Von Trapp family became a sensation. Carrie may not have had the best of acting abilities but when she starts to sing the chemistry that defines her as Maria starts to appear. I don't think it would be fair to compare her with Julie Andrews but I do believe that she did better than any other Broadway actresses who played Maria on-stage. I can only say to myself that they did cast the right people for a television show. To play on-stage would be a different thing.Kudos to Carrie Underwood.

and the word barftastic comes to mind. Would have scored it a 1 but I only wretched 3 or four times.I guess acting wasn't a qualifier for casting. Then again the singing is trite and uninspiring. Watching this made me cheer for the Nazi's. Well only in capturing and locking away the family for crimes against artistry. Even the evil administrator made me want to turn on monster truck wars or something more entertaining. And whoever had the bright idea of putting a guitar in her hands, should resign from ever writing again. It looks robotic and bizarre. The whole look and feel of the movie seems faked, thrown together and in the end, this is a remake that should never have been done.
