It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

We have both an autistic granddaughter and a chihuahua living with us, so this movie was a perfect evening's entertainment. Wonderful acting by so many of the characters. The story does a beautiful job of conveying how people on the autistic spectrum are often mistaken as fully functioning and capable individuals on first impression....and how many of them have intense focus and resourcefulness when it comes to dealing with the things that matter to them. And the script had so many brilliant little plot twists......My favorite perhaps was the policeman who happens to be fluent in Klingon. You'll just have to watch the movie if you want to know the rest. :-)It's a beautiful little movie with a feel good ending.

I love this movie for its realistic presentation of the problems and challenges that people on the autism spectrum have to cope with.However...the social worker's character was written unrealistically. It just seems impossible that a social worker could get so far in life as to grow to adulthood and qualify as a social worker without having a clue as to what Star Trek is, who the characters are, and know that Spock is the Aspie of Star Trek (he shows the markers of Aspeger's, an autism spectrum condition).This is not the fault of the actress who plays the social worker. Toni Collette does her job well. It is just the script she had to work with.As for Dakota Fanning, she did her job well, too. The anxiety and determination that she displayed as she acted her role was totally believable, and it made me identify with the character and feel those emotions as she lived through them.

I could not help giving this movie a 10/10. As a mother with a son with autism this movie gave me so much hope for the future not only for my son yet for my niece who also has autism. It's about time that Autism is brought to light to the mainstream public since most don't understand it or don't even know about it. Dakota Fanning nailed the part of Wendy & her autism. The not making eye contact, looking at pictures of people to put faces to moods. I went through that with my son yet at a much younger age (he's 23 now & still struggles). Not only watching Wendy have a job gives me hope for my son & niece since neither of them are as high in the autism spectrum as the character Wendy. Every autistic child/adult normally has (at least) one thing that they are exceptionally good at. In fact autistic children will score genius on I.Q. tests. While Wendy's is Star Trek & writing, my so excells with computers & also with computer games, & my niece is already a prodigy when it comes to graphic novel art, & drawing characters on a computer at the age of 12. Her Dad just graduated in the field of graphic design for computer games so he gave her all of his school equipment that he used & she's almost surpassed him without any education instruction. This movie shows an array of not just the difficulties with living with autism yet how far some might be willing to go out of their comfort zone to achieve their dream.

I started this movie because of Dakota Fanning and I'm glad that I did! She has given her all once again and I wasn't disappoInted! This film won't win many awards (no violence or sex) but it will be time well spent with the family.
