A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

There is nothing much original about A Song for Marion and ultimately it harms the film. Marion (Vanessa Redgrave) is dying of cancer but retains a zest for life and participates in a pensioners choir who do a revved up version of The Ace of Spades. She worries about her curmudgeonly husband Arthur (Terence Stamp) who resents her being in the choir when she is ill and he also has a strained relationship with their son James (Christopher Eccleston.)When Marion is gone Elizabeth (Gemma Arterton) who leads the choir tries to get Arthur to open up, put side his bitterness and get involved with the choir. The choir have managed to get through the finals of a competition but they are regarded as a one note joke. The old age pensioners tearing through the classics is a plus for the movie. Terence Stamp's angry character and his verbal sparring with Christopher Eccleston is straight out of the kitchen sink dramas of the 1960s and leaves a sour note.

Firstly the characters. perfectly cast . the script , written with passion . every emotion known to mankind is delivered in this superb moving film . family breakdown between members and kin , yet somehow this acts sweetly to the films final classic scene .Uplifting & dynamic in its simplicity . This experience of viewing , a would be art house movie I watched ,laughing at times . holding back silent tears & simply believing this is how a family could actually be surviving ones loss & ones first step in coming out , Deep down the son steals every scene he appears in . Loved it , you will to , A sleeper movie with one hell of a kick I consider this movie a must see in your lifetime . do not miss it rating 4 tissues & counting

Watched Unfinished Song on North American telly last night. Beautiful. The Cyndi Lauper song True Colours Marian sings at her audition aimed at her husband was amazing! And then her husband singing Billy Joel's Lullaby for her just broke me. Cried so much during this movie yet it wasn't overtly sentimental at all. So well done - the acting, the singing, the story and characters. Just loved it.Couple of things I noticed: The colour yellow was featured a lot during the movie. The audition choir are all wearing yellow in their outfits, the young choir mistress played by Gemma Arterton wears a yellow accented dress with yellow sweater, there is lots of yellow in the old couple's house (wallpaper, lamps, towel) and on stage at the end there's a giant yellow circle as a back drop. All the yellow must have been intentional, perhaps to symbolise optimism, and I loved it! I did wonder where it was filmed as the accents were Londonish but being a Geordie girl myself I noticed the area looked very familiar and sure enough it was filmed around Newcastle and County Durham - so why couldn't they have been Geordies??? Hmmmm.I also kept picturing Timothy Spall as the grumpy husband played by Terence Stamp.Very well done!

Terrence Stamp can do small and quiet. That might surprise some people, but he has proved in other movies, that he doesn't have to be the character he is in real life too. Gemma has to walk a very fine line. She's in a movie where not much about her is revealed (except her will and endurance to make old folks happy), but has to make that little work and believable. She also succeeds as does Marion, the woman this is all about.Obviously there is more here than meets the eye (or ear for that matter). Terrence is not only walking in a shell, you feel that shell. But it makes watching him come out of that shell even better. With a movie like this there is not much you can spoil. It moves along the lines you expect it to. But it's an experience that is worth having
