Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

Eh... the best I can say: it was good to see Tut and Ancient Egypt finally get a little attention that doesn't involve walking mummies or biblical myths. Avan Jogia as the young pharaoh was perfectly cast and did well considering the material he was given. He's really the only standout in this otherwise mundane melodrama. I thought the production values were passable for a third-tier cable channel, but all of the usual failings were on full display: no history, bad costumes, worse locations, and indifferent writing. Be warned, this series is not a history lesson. Akhenaten, Tut's father, did not die in Thebes, but in the city of Amarna. Tut did not try and continue his father's monotheism; in fact the only remarkable act of his reign was to return Egypt to the old gods. (Spoilers!) And Horemheb would never have contemplated leaving a wounded Tut behind on a battlefield, even wanting him dead, it was simply impossible to return to Egypt without the pharaoh's body---he was worshiped as a god, after all, and a proper burial of his body was crucial to the Egyptian identity. If a general came back from war without the king, dead or alive, well... no amount of explaining would've saved his head. And "Amun" (the chief god of Egypt) as the name of the high priest!?! How many popes do you know named "Jehovah?" Really stupid choice, there. As for the look of the show: I suppose it must be difficult and costly to find or make jewelry that actually looks like the stuff from Tut's tomb, rather than the crude, clumsy junk seen here. And I very much wish producers and directors would STOP using Morocco as a stand-in for Egypt. The two countries look no more alike than Alaska does Hawaii. And my final gripe: Mitanni was hundreds of miles away from Egypt and in those days would take months, possibly even a year to reach; the series gives the impression it was right next door.

I'm a fan of historical dramas, based heavily on true historical events but dramatised, so I thought that this series would be a decent way to pass some time. I was sorely mistaken. Other series of similar ilk (Rome, Vikings, Outlander) manage to give you the drama while still remaining consistent with the era they're portraying. Unfortunately, Tut does not achieve this goal. In the shows defence, there is limited source material to ensure that historical accuracy is achieved, with Tutankhamun's life remaining fairly mysterious even with projects investigating the genetic lineage of the pharaohs of Egypt. However there are some basic pieces of knowledge that are ignored in this series, the most obvious being the age of the Boy King. History has been pretty clear that Tutankhamun rose to his position of pharaoh around middle childhood, between the ages of six and nine years, and was dead by the time he reached his late teens. My other key critique of the series is the casting. Ben Kingsley was an OK choice, however (and I have to say it otherwise I'm just not being honest), the entire time he's on screen it just seemed like he was thinking "I was in freaking Iron Man, and now I'm reduced to this?!" He flittered from being bad-ass puppet-master (which again, that was historical at least) to being an emasculated mess. I couldn't tell if he was an ally or an enemy. It was confusing. Then you've got Sybilla Deen, who spent the series looking super uncomfortable in her costumes to the point that it distracted from the dialogue. She's wearing something similar to Leeloo out of Fifth Element, but the way she was holding her body was like she was afraid her boobs were going to pop out at any second and scare the life out of Mr Kingsley.

This is truly awful, it is fictional melodrama rather than historical drama. Character development is on the level of caricature (boo the villains everyone). Acting is very average all of which makes it impossible to believe in, or sympathize with the characters. Having a few basic facts and writing a story around them, still born children and a broken leg, is not enough to justify a mini-series. It is hard to find any good points, fans of Ben Kingsley will be disappointed by his portrayal of a very one dimensional villain and the other actors cannot raise the story above the predictable. All in all this is a waste of air time, indeed it is six hours of your life that you will never get back.Give this one a miss.

I read several of the reviews to see anyone said what I was gonna say and didn't look like it so far so here goes.I noticed that allot of people really liked the show, I also thought it was pretty good, but I got the idea the reason for that is, that it's actually Hamlet from Shakespeare with an Egyptian outfit. For those who don't know Hamlet, The Lion King was also the story of Hamlet. Try to see if you find any similarities. You will find many. I did enjoy watching it but I was hoping for a series about ancient Egypt, but except for looking Egyptian it had nothing to do with ancient Egypt so that's why I'm a bit disappointed. There is very little known about Tutankhamen but a few things they do know like who is parents where Ikhnaton and his sister who's name is unknown. they introduced Monotheism during there rule. When Tut became Pharaoh the old gods where reintroduced, probably the clergy took advantage of the young naive pharaoh but none know's, would have been nice if at least there was something about that in the series.
