There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

Rani Mukherji probably gave the performance of her lifetime in this movie. She played the role of a blind and deaf woman, who struggles through life with the aid of her teacher, played by the mesmerizing Amitabh Bachchan.Black is the story of hope. It is a story of endurance, of the strength of love and the powers of the human mind. Michelle is a woman born deaf and blind to an Indian family. Her parents do not know how to manage her until they meet Mr. Debraj Sahay - a dedicated but somewhat eccentric teacher of the deaf and blind. Thus begins the story of a lifelong journey of teacher and student. Gradually, Mr. Sahay drags Michelle from her existence as a wild, confused and thus, violent kid with a bell tied to her to becoming a normal human being - learning table manners, communicating through sign language, learning to read and type, etc. He pushes Michelle to achieve the impossible feat of getting admitted into a university and, after years of persistence, graduating. However, Mr. Sahay suffers from Alzheimer's, which causes his memories to fade, and it is up to Michelle now to teach her teacher to read again.Performance wise, Rani Mukherji stole the show. We go through the same emotions she goes through in the film, without her being able to deliver a single line of dialogue. Her despair, anguish, joy, pain, love - the whole array of her emotions - is portrayed so beautifully, it is hard to imagine that Rani can actually hear and speak. Amitabh Bachchan is brilliant as the teacher who drags Michelle from abyss to light - being stubborn and loving at the same time. His persistence is the only ray of hope for Michelle. Ayesha Kapoor as the young Michelle portrays her confusion and wilderness brilliantly. Nandana Sen plays Michelle's sister Sarah. Sarah is jealous of all the attention Michelle gets and Nandana portrays this brilliantly.Black is a film which has been made passionately. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done a brilliant job as the director, and his passion for the film seeps through in every frame. This is what makes this film truly great.

Its a bit late for me to post this review. But memories were rekindled after the Saawariya fiasco of the apparently great Sanjay Leela Bansali. I was in India at that time, and many people talked about Black as if no one every made a movie like that ever. First of all its a remake, so attributing a "genius" tag to Bansali is uncalled for. I also did not appreciate the fact that he did not admit to the fact that it is a remake of The Miracle Worker. I mean, be a man. Tell the world you are making a remake. Secondly, in Bollywood, overacting means good acting seems to be the norm. Rani was as shrill as you can see. You can paint emotion but if the colors just bleed than it looses its grace. Bansali just went overboard. Some scenes make no sense. The empty rooms with slide images portrayed in the background. The needless filled sets. They distracted more. The film has its moments. Especially the one where Rani meets AB after a long time. I will not go into more details for the sake of those who haven't seen it (yet). In the same week, I had the good fortune of seeing Million Dollar Baby and.. boy.. what a difference. To see how emotions are handled subtly.. now THAT was a treat. Perhaps Bansali ought to learn from Eastwood.. if he gets down from cloud 9 that is...
