It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

Martian Child Never ever, never-never-never, never ever give up Recently I have watched the comedy drama directed by Menno Meyjes and David Gerrold (the roman's author of the same name) that is called "Martian child" which includes too many psychological and philosophical topics. The main actors are Amanda Peet, John Cusack, Oliver Platt who have already played in the same movie before and the child, Bobby Coleman. All of them are truly professionals. By the way, John Cusack is so popular with many of his roles, but his role as David in "Martian Child" is really successful. The viewer may notice how sensible, helpful and friendly he is, he definitely feels his character. Bobby Coleman has managed wonderfully to play such a difficult character as the Martian Child. He is just an ancient sole. He has puzzled all secrets out.It is a really deep, beautiful and thought-provoking movie. It depicts one of the most serious problems of society, frames and standards. The matter is that if you are unordinary, if you do not look alike, if you are different, people think you are abnormal, crazy or have some psychological disorders and nobody wants to deal with you. The main character of the movie knows what such people feel because he was an outcast when he went to school that is why the Martian Child has become so close to him. The Martian Child is a sullen boy who is constantly sitting in the box and imagines that he has come to the planet to perform the mission. David (John Cusack) seems to be a very wise person here; although he told in the very beginning that he had not had anything common with the psychology he managed to build a very harmonic relation with a boy based on a really deep understanding of psychology. The main principle is not to damage. David has decided not to interfere in the child's mind, he doesn't make any demands or impose himself, he just gives the opportunity to the kid to open his inner world to others, and he let the child do some small steps when he is ready to do them.In spite of the impressive play of John Cusack, it is very important to listen to him in this movie and to hear what he says because many things are really wise that have been mentioned here. The boy who has been abandoned once tries to explain the act of his parent. He imagined his own world and created the whole story and believed in it so much that he began living the part. He has decided that he is Martian and he is not abandoned but sent to perform a very important mission on the Earth. He was the way too into it that he was able to do some small miracles like to guess what colour an M&M's candy eating it with closed eyes or to change colours of the traffic light because all our thoughts have a great impact on out lives and may change a lot. It was not an easy business to open the inner mind of this child and we could see it when David was not able to control his emotions or words but finally he managed. Danny grounded when he took the awful truth and asked, "Why did they leave me?"I wanted to show you that not all parents may disappearThe culmination of the movie is the episode on the roof when Danny decided to go to his "biological" Martian parents. There have been many sensible episodes before, for example, when the dog passed away or some David's tries of father's acts of love, but the episode of the roof is the revelation, to which the scriptwriter had been coming for the whole film. Here both of the characters are absolutely opened and defenseless to each other. They both came to a new period of their father-and-son relations. It's wonderful how the director managed to cover so many topics for discussions in such a short movie with a few characters and was able to show all spheres of David's life.In conclusion, I would like to add that this movie is really worth to watch. If you are wit, clever and like long philosophical discussions, you should concentrate one hour and a half on this movie leaving all your problems behind.

This is an example of a nice family movie. The plot is pretty original and ordinary at the same time: an adult adopts a child nd tries to find common ground with him. The special thing about their relations is that the little boy imagined that he is from a different planet and behaves as a Martian child. He hopes that one day his real parents will come back to Earth and get him. He can't understand how his mother could abandoned him and creates such an image. John Ceasuck in the role of father plays brilliantly. His character tries to get the boy out his world without turning his brains. Actually, if to think generally this story can be applied to any child as everybody fabled at least once. And it can be apllied to adults too. Every person is from Mars in a way. The movie is full of funny moments and it is simulteneously thought-provoking. There are moments to analyse and to think of ourselves. I suppose Martian Child is a good example of right family values. I reccomend to watch this movie to everybody at least to enlarge the outlook and maybe to reconsider the attitude towards unusual people. There is much more hidden under frivolous behaviour.

Saying on the spot - I loved every minute of this heart-melting film.'Martian Child' is a story about a widowed science-fiction writer David (John Cusack) who adopts Dennis (Bobby Coleman), a 6-year-old boy who believes himself to be from Mars. Why does he think so? Because it allows him to convince himself that his parents didn't leave him - he just never had them. It is an intelligent movie that touches upon an important topic - being different from others. Since childhood we are taught that if we are not like others, if we don't follow the accepted rules and norms of the society, then we will be considered to be bizarre or even insane and we will be shunned. David had such experience and because of that he feels that a Martian boy, called 'a weirdo' and hiding in the box, is his soulmate. Step by step David helps Dennis leave that box (literally and metaphorically) and open his heart to love and trust. It is not easy, of course, but he manages to do it. No, not he. THEY. They do it together. And, finally, Dennis comes down to earth and accepts the bitter truth which culminates in his question, 'Why did they leave me?' and the whole scene on the roof. This scene is the goal the creators of the film went to, having decided to explore such a difficult topic. This scene is a revelation. For the first time during the whole film both David and Dennis are completely open to and defenseless against each other. The wall that Danny built in an attempt to hide from the rest of the world finally tumbles down, and David breaks through it. For me the message of this film is the following: no matter how strange or different from others you are, as long as you have people who love and accept you for who you are, who stand by you through anything, you can move mountains. +1 to the list of my favourite films. P.S. I liked that there is balance in this movie between the moments that make you smile and laugh (for example, the scene of breaking plates and spraying ketchup) and the moments that make you cry as if never again in your life will you have such an opportunity (the scene on the roof).

A successful science fiction writer David Gordon (John Cusack) has recently lost his wife. Still suffering from the loss, he finds a boy who considers himself a Martian. The boy, who lives in the box among the stars that can be seen only by him. Social services and David's sister can't dissuade David from letting the stranger in his home and subsequently in his heart. Dennis (Bobby Coleman) is a Martian. To go outside, he needs to use sunscreen, and he is sure that must fulfill his mission and will soon return to his home planet. He is the outcast, but David's love and faith help Dennis find a way out from the box and become a normal even a kind of happy boy. This movie is unique and thought-provoking one, because it touches so many issues: the problem of identity and self-worth, child up-bringing and the feeling of responsibility. I believe that «Martian Child» is a movie that could be really useful for parents and for teachers as well. It gives the insight into the fact that so many kids are different and at the same time they are special and wonderful. Such children need the chance to live normal life among the people who love them. Yes! They are extraordinary, they don't live on the Earth, they live among the stars. Nevertheless, they need someone who can help them, who can take them to the Earth and make their trip breathtaking even within the limits of our planet. But the parents should remember one motto "Never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever give up".
