Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.

A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

Writer/director Sofia Coppola tries to paint a picture of a man suffering ennui, but her idea of suffering misses the target. Start with the opening scene, where the Brad Dorff lays in bed, appearing half asleep, while hired twin strippers perform on poles in front of him. The nightstand is littered with alcoholic/pharmaceutical props. It's an inauthentic attempt to paint a picture of substance abuse and misery. The character is a movie star who lives in a fancy Beverly Hills residential hotel, and has beautiful, naked women throwing themselves his way. He has a very nice relationship with his teenage daughter, and by chance when his ex-wife suddenly checks out, has to take his daughter with him on a trip to Milan, where he's appearing on a TV show. That works out great. While in Milan, he has a mature and non-problematic encounter with a woman. From my point of view, there is nothing about the events on screen that would make me think that there's anything wrong, but Coppola has the character brooding about it anyway. I am not convinced. I think that Coppola is the one brooding here -- about men she has known and been disappointed in. This is a great movie for deconstruction and finding out what's bothering the writer, but it's not the least bit entertaining or believable.

Somewhere is after The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation the third movie I saw from director Sofia Coppola. It was a success like those movies before it. Somewhere is not good because of the story, but because of the characters and their actors. We get to know the characters by little clues. It is a less is more movie, and I like those kind of movies. The protagonist, played by Stephen Dorff. I knew him especially from Blade. He played very good I liked him in this movie. Elle Fanning played maybe even better. She acted very naturally. Like I said before, I liked those kind of movies. The structure of the movie is very slow, but the movie has compelling characters and is beautifully shot. The soundtrack was pretty awesome too. Julian Casablancas' song was a highlight of the movie. It fitted perfectly in the movie. Well done.

This is it Sophia Coppola has lost it she tries too hard to get into art genre its not everyones game its a gift she is no roman Polanski so why bother but i have to say her lost in translation 2003 was much better then this any day.Why Sophia Coppola never gives chance to Nicolas Cage in her movies is beyond me they are cousins & family plus Cage is a top class legend actor instead Sophia just writes lame scripts only for gaining praise from critics its been so many years she directs same type of films the characters in her films are shown as extremely tragic ones trying to gain sympathy every time. The Plot:a confused Hollywood actor goes to a hotel just to get drunk, get laid with women but suddenly his daughter arrives there too and things go more awkward.Where is the story just what were these guys thinking the hotel was bad,the strippers appear doing weird dance Johnnny Marco actually lets a male massage man enter the room just when he is undressing john gets up & says this is not for me i mean wow i bet the audience just clapped at this scene at least he realized he quick he was in trouble. The big question is why is he keeping his daughter in same kinky hotel filled with filthy environment john simply does not care because he himself is a person with no morals, manners or shame left. The pace is slow affecting viewers attention one cool thing this project has is the black Ferrari which john drives & wastes not only fuel but his time & also of the audience members who paid big money for this film having some expectations or hoping they might get entertain but nothing interesting happens from start to finish.I will tell two films that are amazing then this movie first one is Leaving Las Vegas 1995 & second is Flashbacks Of A Fool 2008 starting Daniel Craig i have seen both of them those are classics compared to this junk. The Cast:Stephen Dorff is a good actor but he must not be happy after he saw this attached to his filmography the rest cast fails to impress but what the hell was Benicio Del Toro doing here along with other famous celebrities including Michelle Monaghan.Overall Somewhere 2010 is the most empty film from Sophia Coppola i hope she would not make this mistake again my rating is 2/10.Skipp It

This movie is good for anyone interested in acting. In the reality of acting. Not the lies (dreams) that are usually given to us to feel good. Or just stoned. No. Here is indeed a film that seems boring. It seems so boring that when it ends you may wonder what you've been looking at. And I guess that's the expected effect. Y'see, what is usually sold to us is that actors lead a wonderful life, just because they get money and a job that sustains their ego. But doesn't a 'wonderful' life depend on what acting you do? On what kind of movie you do for a living? and why? I won't spoil the movie. But this movie is a good movie. It is a movie that stops the illusion that actors are somehow living on a better planet. They're not. And there is a perversion in this society about actors, showing them as more important or interesting than a lambda person, even more intelligent, so intelligent that we would ask serious questions about the world to an actor. Again, certain actors are intelligent, others are less... That movie, as well as 'Ellie Parker' that I just saw, is a movie that may ask us : why the hell are we so deluded by the cinematographic medium and what do we wanna eat for movies? I would add a little precise note to end this critic : someone here criticized certain scenes for showing a not so well done activity, but the way that activity is showed is just the way I can imagine it would be if I saw it in reality. And that shows that we are so trained to nice pictures, nice prestations, as if everyone always has to be perfectly dressed, haired, has to make all perfect moves, etc. We don't like to look at reality!
