Club Dread (2004)

People are voting emotionally.

Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

Upon arriving at an island resort, the staff finds that several members and guests are turning up dead, they try to keep it from the guests who are there to enjoy the hedonistic lifestyle promoted on the island while trying to find the identity of the killer and stop their rampage.This is really the way a horror-comedy should be like. What really makes this one so much fun is the fact that in spite of how most spoofs are more comedy than horror, this is a horror movie with some comedy. It keeps the traditional merging of the slasher genre with the mixture of enough laughable gags that's never unrealistic or way over the top to really make it seem more like it belongs in the horror genre than comedy. This lets on for a ton of fun from a race through a maze dressed up as fruit, the sequence where one guest frantically works to get a getaway vehicle to escape the killer, only to find out it goes under five miles an hour allowing the killer to walk up to it and kill them is a fantastic scene which reveals in complete irony and actual tension as well as the series of confrontations in the jungle as the killer stalks after them around the resort as the attacks by the pool, inside the main hall and out along the jungle courses come complete with all the usual angles and close-ups that are frequently utilized for generating suspense as well as engaging in laughs. This all comes from the story itself which is a great setup for one of these efforts as it's full of surprises and excellent plot twists as you keep guessing who is the killer. It does come as a great shock at the end, and it works as the mystery is very well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat. There's a pretty decent sized body count on display here for a horror-comedy, keeping it bloody quite often and giving it more of a slasher feel to the proceedings with the string of vicious and exceptionally violent kills that are still somewhat hilarious in the concept of their use. There's also the rather fun finale here that goes overboard with the chasing to the final encounter and all the different battles that are more comedic than scary but still fit well within the confines of the story. There wasn't much of anything to really dislike about this one. It's mostly just a case-by-case basis, as the majority of things on display will appeal to certain people rather than others. Very rarely is there a case of individual preference in these films, but this is one of them as the overkill in the final half might be one of these issues. Overall, this was a very pleasant and surprisingly good film.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Extreme Graphic Language, Nudity, several sex scenes and drug use.

The overlong Club Dread is certainly something different, a combination of comedy that doesn't always work, and underestimated gore. One plus of course is the hot Brittany Daniel, but overall this comedy/psycho/horror thriller just sets itself at that really bad standard, and mate, do you get your gore's worth. As a thriller, the film really works, with many a suspect, but you've got everything you want here, where sometimes these low denominator films do have great appeal. Horror freaks of trashy films, you'll be right at home at home here on an island of love, romance and homicidal killings, for who is the really sick puppy committing these hideous mutilations. With barely a run at one S.A. cinema, here's one of the worst films of 2004, with addictive appeal and rightly so.

Well this is a review for Club Dread an interesting movie by those zany guys that brought us "Super Troopers". This is a comedy/horror about a bunch of people going to an island resort to have a good time but little do they know a psycho killer is out to ruin their alcohol/drug soaked lives.There are parts of this movie that are very entertaining such as some of the twisted songs that are in the film but really this doesn't much feel like a comedy or a horror. I don't really feel much like laughing or screaming.The movie does have some small value and can be entertaining as a party movie. I'm not sure that I'd watch this movie unless you are a little intoxicated first. Well best wishes to your viewing.

Club Dread is a very interesting piece of work, not really too original, exciting, well done, action filled or intelligent... and honestly not even good. Basically it pivots around a bunch of people stuck on an island with a killer, giving it quite the "oh please not another movie like that" feeling. However, they are not just a handful of people on a deserted island, they are the staff of "Pleasure Island" and need to keep their cool while taking care of a load of tourists. The plot is by no means complicated but it stands out just enough and can be quite unpredictable sometimes. Just beware of a very common mistake! Don't give up after the first few minutes, it gets better and better all the way to the end!This movie needs you to fulfill three different criteria before you can truly enjoy its interesting properties to the fullest. I have listed them below, the first being the most important and so on. Number 1; you need to be able to laugh freely and comfortably at silly, odd and stupid things. Number 2; you need to make sure you are not disturbed by "almost well done gore" or attractive women not wearing a whole lot of clothes. Number 3; you need to be observant enough to notice details, and too tired (or possibly drunk) to be upset when these details don't match, instead you need the ability to laugh at it.With these things in mind, my punchline is; This movie is a total piece of crap! Characters, script, effects, dialog, actors and most other stuff too can't be called anything other than crap! However, follow the simple guidelines and force a few friends to watch it with you and you will laugh so hard you will never forget this movie. Hard to tell if the movie was intended to be hilarious or serious, but regardless the intentions behind it... this is a comedy overdose! Total piece of crap but in a Very entertaining way, I give it a 7 out of 10 because months later I still start laughing like a maniac when I think about some of the scenes in the movie.
