Far From Heaven, while entertaining in its own right, would be especially enjoyable to fans of Fifties movies. It is not just set in the Fifties, it appears to be a Fifties movie, in its look, plot structure, even acting styles. Present-day attitudes are overlaid on the story, but very subtly. This is more than a tribute to Fifties films; it is a Fifties film. The story itself is typical of films from that era. A seemingly happy, conventional, middle class Connecticut couple experiences turmoil when the husband (Dennis Quaid) confesses to sexual confusion. His wife (beautifully played by Julianne Moore) turns to a black friend for friendship and comfort, which shocks their circle of acquaintances and causes her seemingly perfect life to be thrown into confusion. It is a well written, consistently engaging story with a good cast. Making it as a re-created Fifties movie adds irony and interest. A very enjoyable film.

This is a powerful drama starring Julianne Moore as Cathy Whittaker who is seemingly happy with her husband Frank and their children. However, things take an unfortunate turn when Frank is being unfaithful and Cathy ends up having a crush on Raymond Deagan (Dennis Haysbert). As this story was set in the 1950s, racial tension was still high. You feel the negative effects it had on the characters, as Cathy feels an unwanted presence in a black neighborhood while visiting Raymond, and, at the same time, distancing herself with her white friends at home. To rub salt in the wound, her husband is having an affair with another man. This movie's title fits Cathy's life well; she finds it hard to be with Raymond because of racial tensions and her inconsiderate and jerk of a husband left her and their kids with for man. The superb acting contributed to the overall drama, but the course of events and bummer climax really leaves you in a state of depression. There were also wasn't much in character development and not much redeeming qualities in any of them. Grade C-

This movie is absolutely awful. PC polemic pure and simple. The scenery characters and lines e.g. "aw shucks" are like they took all of TV for the 50s and distilled it down to 500 proof...then added 2012 sensibilities. The movie basically is revised history and a complicated lie. Nothing is covered in depth nor truthfully. The movie gives much more insight into it's creators than it's subject. Why do they insist on this myth? Surprised the thing didn't sweep the Oscars. The professional reviews were the only fun thing about this movie = Ebert: "Like Best and Bravest Movie of 1957." Village Voice: "Supremely Intelligent..." Rolling Stone: "Quaid and Moore give performance of their careers.." To give this movie such reviews is so ridiculous it is actually funny. Doesn't it bother them to be intellectually dishonest--or are they really that dumb?--you wonder. The reviews on IMDb that give it 1-2 stars are far more accurate.I agree with one reviewer--I never saw a 1956 Buick with fender skirts either---particularly a low end station wagon and they were a different color than the car body. Maybe a Roadmaster convertible owned by a pimp.Netflix advertised this as a gay/lesbian movie. That is like advertising a film about 9/11 as a movie for Saudi audiences.Moore's costumes and the rayed wall clocks are museum quality. This is a movie you want to forget as quickly as you can.DO NOT RECOMMEND

This is honestly one of the worst movies I have watched in a LONG time. I fell asleep about 45 minutes into the movie because I was so bored. I thought this would be a good movie because I remember that it got good reviews after it came out. Well the reviews were wrong. This movie is so incredibly slow, the dialogue is boring, and the acting seems so stiff and forced. The way they portray Julianne Moore as the "average, normal 50's housewife" is totally inaccurate. What did the director think every woman was like June Cleaver then?? I highly doubt that a normal woman acted that way and spoke that way. I mean come on, seriously. It's a shame because this movie maybe could have been saved and made into something watchable if maybe another director had done this movie. This movie is just bad in my opinion. It's only good to watch if you need a sleep-aid.
