Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017)

Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Anybody looking for something simple to watch on Netflix, or are looking for a new animated movie to show their child/ren, this is the film to do it. This film was clearly met for children, but as an adult it's still entertaining to watch and sit through.

Capturing the spirit of the silly source books almost perfectly, this self-referential big screen adaptation never takes itself too seriously and is just a joy to watch because of it. There are more than a few laughs to be found in 'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017)' and the whimsical nature of the feature, which exists firmly in it's own world where the fourth wall is merely a suggestion and the fabric of the film itself is as tangible a dimension as time, keeps a smile on your face from beginning to end as the movie packs as many amusing animation styles, successfully sly in-jokes (much to the delight of fans of the books) and uproarious potty humour puns as possible into its lean ninety-minute frame. Don't expect a masterpiece, but do expect to laugh at 'Uranus' once again. 7/10

If you had to pick a movie that you think is the ultimate kid's movie, would you pick this? I probably would. CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS was a surprise to me. I remember the books being popular in elementary school. I have seen what a CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS book contains. So to see it transported to the big screen would be a challenge. At first, I didn't like that casting of Kevin Hart and Thomas Middletech portraying the two main boys. I would have loved to have heard actual boys play the characters. But as the film went on it didn't bother me as much. I think they did a good job. They play George and Harold, two pranksters that get on the principal's nerves. So from the start we know that these two are real best friends. They also enjoy making comics, with their magnum opus being Captain Underpants. So with the power of a hypno-ring they are able to hypnotize their principal to become Captain Underpants himself. So you can tell that there was going to be a lot of toilet jokes through out. And you know what I liked it. It fits perfectly with the story and at the same time stays true to the source. My favorite part where I completely lost my head laughing would be the Fart concert. What's not to laugh about it. I also liked that the two boys had super imaginations and they showed how they perceived every situation in their heads. It sounds like the movie was about them even though the title is called Captain Underpants. I think this is a great adaptation of the books. Not a lot of studios can pull it off and some how Dreamworks Animation manged to do it.

From the name and the positive reactions, it got I thought this must be a film that is funny and somehow trying to break some stereotypes but it turns out to be nothing special. There are a lot of moments that made me smile but it never made me laugh and if someone doesn't understand poop jokes he got to be the villain? Seriously, the jokes are not that funny or even offensive considering the kinds of jokes used. The way the villains are portrayed is the worst part of the film.
