It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

A farcical door-slamming comic version of "All About Eve" set in the world of daily soaps instead of the Broadway. What makes this film so fun is the cast playing the cheesy soap opera actors are made up of quite a few respectable Oscar winners and nominees; Sally Field, Elisabeth Shue, Kevin Kline, Cathy Moriarty, Robert Downey Jr., and Whoopie Goldberd (not to mention other solid cast members Carrie Fisher, Kathy Najimy, Teri Hatcher, Garry Marshall, Costas Mandylor, and Ben Stein). Field plays an aging soap opera queen who's being nudged out by an up an coming actress, Shue, who makes a splash on the show as a homeless person (because the producer doesn't want unattractive homeless people on the show), turns out to be her daughter! Enter Kevin Kline, an old flame of Field's the producer re-hires onto the show in order to drive Fields out. There's a ton of other sub plots involving Goldberg's head writer, show producer being manipulated by bully actress Moriarty, and everything culminating in a live Tootsie-like climactic broadcast. The fast pace dialogue courtesy of Andrew Bergman ("The In-Laws," "The Freshman," "Honeymoon in Vegas"), the the rapid fire delivery by a talented cast, and a breezy score by Alan Silvestri, make this an incredibly fun throwback to screwballs comedies of the 30s the 40s. If you like this cast or love classic screwball comedies, "Soapdish" is a must see!

Excellent cast, amazing comic timing, hilarious situations yet humane emotions. Couldn't stop chucking and giggling throughout. I've always seen this movie in bits and pieces. Today, I got the chance to see the complete movie. What a gem! :D I revisited this movie mainly for Downey. Although he is a support character, he holds his own among the other heavyweights in the movie. The plot is simple, an ambitious supporting actress wants to bump off the TV soaps long-time star. She comes up with a conniving plan and takes the help of the show's producer to execute her plan. But, she is in for a surprise when nothing goes as planned. "Soapdish" gives a glimpse of the personal dramas and life of the people in the TV world, and how easily the line between the reel & real can blur. Nothing in this movie is remotely vulgar or obscene. It played safe yet the comedy is highly effective in evoking laughs. Brownie points for the actors to be able to pull this off with élan.

This is an absolutely entertaining film from open to close. Fine for your 12 and up kids, hilarious, and oh so charming. It is a classic at our house! Kevin Kline and Sally Field are magic together. The film's premise, characters, script, and direction are simply delightful. This is the kind of movie that SHOULD have been nominated for some Academy Awards, but wasn't. You can watch it time after time and laugh again, and share it with new friends and family members. If you enjoy comedy, and if you've ever seen even five minutes of a real daytime soap opera, you'll enjoy this funny, sweet comedy. It's one of our favorites.

Every aspect of this film is exaggerated but Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Whoopi Goldberg and Matthew Broderick perform delightfully and Elizabeth Shue is wonderful as (well, I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone who hasn't seen the film by explaining her role). Is the story credible? No. Are the characters believable? No. Is the script especially good? No. Is the outcome even remotely worthy of suspended belief? No, no, no.But Kline, Goldberg and Broderick are major talents, and this may be Sally Field's best film performance ever.Leave your critical instincts in a lower drawer and enjoy.
