Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

Hmmmm... The film intrigues and presents (in the first 10 minutes) as a feel good movie that explores one mans struggle with the bottle and the reigniting of his passion. However, it has reconfirmed the idea that struggling writers can only write about.... ...other struggling writers 🙄. There's a lack of depth in the "soul-searching" storytelling that has undertones of love and is smeared in alcoholism. This film is written with flimsy and unrealistic interaction between characters and seeks to over compensate with an overbearing use of poetic linguistics. And what can one do when alphabet soup provides a better read than an "unimaginative" script? Find someone who can read you the phone book and make it sound beautiful; enter Morgan Freeman. The actors seem uptight as I think they knew what I know now- and that is this movie is a waste of time. 2 stars.

If this movie had been made back in the 1930's it would probably be remembered as a 'classic' today! But with today cynical movie going public, it most likely sunk without trace at the box office? I came across it on DVD when I was looking up films that Fred Willard had appeared in, having enjoyed him in 'Everybody Loves Raymond' and the short lived 'Back To You' TV series. As it turns out Fred isn't in this all that much, but as always, he's quirky and good, however, the off beat casting of Morgan Freeman as a disillusioned author of westerns who's taken to drink, and the gorgeous much under rated Virginia Madsen as his next door neighbour works a treat in this delightful, feel good little movie! In fact everyone in it is perfect casting, and all deliver the goods. No violence, no explosions, no foul language, no brats, no CGI, how refreshing, mind you, there is one gunshot, fired into the air! Now and again a little gem like this comes along just to remind us of better cinematic days gone by, if you haven't got a big smile on your face, and a warm feeling in your heart at the end of this movie, I'm afraid there's no hope for you!

I cannot believe Virginia Madsen and Morgan Freeman agreed to be associated with this film. It is poorly written, poorly directed and with the exception of the two actors mentioned above, poorly acted. Essentially it is four cliché stories that have been done before, meshed into one big, cheesy mess. There are some unbearable scenes that were obviously crafted by the writer who couldn't find a transition between stories. There is a character who is mentally challenged and the actor who played the role did such a poor job, I actually thought he was joking for a few minutes. The story is so predictable, I could actually finish much of the dialogue. On the positive side, the cinematography is pretty good and the scenery is nice to look at.

i stumbled upon this film quite by chance. Did not know anything about it and it blew me away! Really one of the most beautiful films I have seen lately... or at all. Maybe I loved it that much because I am a writer myself so I could relate to many things concerning inspiration - lack of it... The message of the film is really great and powerful. I must confess that I could not stop crying for almost 20 minutes or so ... I don't think I have cried watching a movie that much from ... Bridges of the Medison County?!Really would recommend it to everyone, especially those poetic souls. 10 from me!
