a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

Back in 1964, Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard) tried to compete in Salisbury, N Carolina but he's not wanted as the only black competitor. Then it's 1973. All he can get is a job to close down a rec center from the Philadelphia Department of Recreation. He finds bitter maintenance guy Elston (Bernie Mac) and a rundown swimming pool. Sue Davis (Kimberly Elise) is the representative who is reluctantly closing down the unused center. When the city takes down the basketball rims, Jim teaches the kids to swim. It turns out that Sue Davis is the sister and guardian of one of the kids. It's a simple formulaic sports movie. It adds in a splash of racism, a splash of poverty, and stirs it up in an unconventional black sport. Terrence Howard holds it all together. Bernie Mac could have done some damage with his clowning but it's in small doses. It's heart warming at the appropriate time. Tom Arnold may not have the weight to play the bad guy. However the movie follows the underdog formula and does a good job.

You know, I find it a bit ridiculous that most movies with Characters that are mainly African American/Black, never make it past a 5 or above in its 5 star ratings. I think that this movie is excellent. It shows what our struggles are and were like with trying to go out into the world. "Some things don't change"; yeah well, Mr. Howard, they don't. And according to these comments, it seems like many of us as a generation will still have to put up with the nonsense. Movie was exceptional. Take a look into o u r world. Many cheat us of our ratings and it's beyond foul. Bet if this movie was mainly with Caucasians, it'd be at least a 9, am I correct? Just being honest.

Outstanding movieI loved this movie. Bernie Mack and Terrence Howard are excellent. The film is very touching and I cried during it. I'm glad it is a true story. Very inspirational! It shows that a person can overcome any obstacle if they are determined to do so. A very outstanding movie. It is a inspiritual for our today children's that is growing up in the inner city. It tell a story that you can succeed in life even if you live in the inner city. It only take one person to mentor and change your life. A fabulously made movie acting is outstanding and the story line could not be pertrade any better. Simply outstanding.

In 1964 there was a black swimmer who tried to compete in an all white swim meet in North Carolina. The white people booed him. When he jumped in the pool, no one else competed. He got upset. Then he was a victim of police brutality. Ten years later, he came to Philadelphia to a run down recreation center to close it down. But he found a pool and started an award winning swim team. Terrace Dashon Howard did a great job playing coach Ellis. It was so funny to see Bernie Mac and Tom Arnold playing serious roles in this movie. And the young people in this movie could act. Evan Ross proved once again that he is not just Diane Ross's son. And Kimberly Elise made this movie. Make sure you watch the DVD version so you will see deleted scenes.
