A waste of 90 minutes of my life
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Though not Orson Welles' most famous piece, it's important to note that when The Stranger made its debut, it was his highest-grossing film to date. The Stranger deserves more recognition and attention than it gets, overshadowed often. A wonderful blend of human emotion, drama and mystery. A town full of genuinely kind and unassuming people is a deliciously dreadful backdrop to serve as a foil for the true evil that is Franz Kindler. Loretta Young and Welles each display their respective prowess; Young with her talent for drama and emotion shining through and Welles does well playing a snake who tries to deceive everyone, maybe even himself too. A great film and one that any self-respecting Welles fan needs to watch!
There are plenty of reasons to love a noir film. And this film gives you plenty to choose from. Maybe not the strongest plot, but it has beautiful camera work, and great control of lights and shadows. After World War II there was a large amount of controversy over such atrocities such as the holocaust. I think that the bottled up pain and anguish that the American population suffered was in a sense justified with the hunting and eventually execution of the remaining Nazi's. Orson Welles really understood his audience, and was able to produce a great film for the age.
I liked this movie, it had an interesting plot that really kept me watching. It took me probably 15 minutes in to actually realize what was going on but I eventually got it. I feel like this movie could be identified as a thriller, crime, and/or drama movie because it had characteristics of each. It was also a fairly dark film. The investigator was really good at his job. I could predict how the movie would end but it was still a good watch. I like mystery movies.
I had heard some pretty negative things about this film but it was a pretty good "thriller". Welles films tend to have a theme surrounding the main male character and his dark past but they also always have those long shots that seem to draw you in to the film and the story. "The Stranger" is definitely different from his other films I have seen because it was more classic Hollywood and less original Orsen Welles but that was intentional.Orson Welles not only directs but plays the leading role in his films a lot of the time. He does a great job of showing the conflicted protagonist who can also be gentle and loving. The story was interesting and capture the viewer with its plot. This movie was a good film, not the best of Welles but definitely enjoyable.Typical to Welles style of directing, there were some really nice long shots but with the scenes capturing the snow it took on a magical feel with the result. The scenes would have dark lighting but that sis typical to noir films. I think the best shot scenes of the film were the ones showing everyday life of the town in the winter. The scenes shot with the snow just took on a different feel of the film to almost contrast the plot of this noir film.
