Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, itinerant journalist Paul Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman. Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s 'The Lost Generation', Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman and her fiancée, a businessman involved in shady property development deals.  It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

Slow pace in the most part of the movie.

The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama

I chose to watch this movie based on the actors that took part in it. I never read the book this movie was based on so I don't know if the book is accurately depicted on the movie...What I can tell is that despite being entertaining at times, there is too much drinking and drunkenness involved to make it a memorable movie. It feels like a drunken journey to nowhere! A battle against those which have money and don't care about the oppressed ones seems like a political manifesto of some sort, as this movie isn't intended to be political I didn't quite understand the point of all this.

While this was not a poorly made film, it lacked a sense of purpose. It is about a made-up writer (that they falsely lead you to believe was a real man) who moves to Puerto Rico to get a job and is a drunk. What else is it about may you ask? I'm not altogether sure. It was not completely incoherent, but the storyline had no focus. It jumped around and quickly left one topic, idea, or narrative just as soon as it introduced it. Towards the end right when you think Paul Kemp had an ambitious cause, it was over. With the cheesy line "this is the end of one story and the beginning of another" they leave you to realize that you are in the same place as you started. Nothing had really happened at all or had been accomplished. I did enjoy the performances by all of the actors, but this fact was dampened by distractions of the plot that lead to nowhere. In the end it all just seemed pointless and without reason.

Hard to review a movie like this, because I can't even say what's the main subject in it. But i enjoyed this movie. I think that most of the women out there wont find it interesting or entertaining and rather rate it boring, but if you are a man in a lazy mood and you like: drinking, smoking, old San Juan and Puerto Rico, getting in trouble and at least once you have been at the wrong place at the wrong time, then you will be able to understand the funny pats of itMix these 4 - red, white, blue and gold - and now you've got the color of raw home made rum.beauty with Red lips, wearing Red dress, riding fullspeed in Red retro car, waking up with Red eye, Red flowers - rosesrich people with White shirts, "El Monstruo" - the White rooster, empty White pages of future novel, White spots in memoryendless Blue sea, everyday Blue sky, old cracked Blue walls, tiny Blue carGolden sunglasses frame, Golden sandy beaches, Golden "spy" telescope, Golden rusty retro motorbike ...and a couple trying to have sex, listening to an old vynil, with Hitler giving a speech...Imagine different combinations with these. But all roads leads to getting drunk with rum.

When I bought a CD of this movie I was so excited, because I thought: "Wow,finally I bought it!". But. There is one thing. It wasn't so good than I expected. That's why I gave 8 points for this movie. It's not the best or one of the best movies I have ever watched, but it wasn't very very bad. "The rum diary" was quite interesting movie and the plot is not bad. Actors were good I think. There were some really funny moments.I'm not Bruce Robinson's fan,but I can say that he is a successful novels' and biographical novels' author. Actually I have never read the book "The rum diary" but I would like to and I think that perhaps novel is better than movie. So it's only my opinion. All people are different and their opinions are different. In conclusion I want to say that actors in the movie are good, director is good too. If You have time, watch this movie. Perhaps it will be the best movie for You,because our opinions are usually different. So I want to wish a nice evening with this movie,I hope You'll like it and You'll give 10 points for "The rum diary".
