Lil and Roz are two lifelong friends, having grown up together as neighbors in an idyllic beach town. As adults, their sons have developed a friendship as strong as that which binds their mothers. One summer, all four are confronted by simmering emotions that have been mounting between them, and each find unexpected happiness in relationships that cross the bounds of convention.

Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

When bad Aussie drama meets Ingmar Bergman, you have Adore. Two lifelong friends decide to sleep with each other sons for what reason? I don't know. With nary a hint of regret or conflict, these affairs go on with the redundancy of food prep. Coming from the writer of Dangerous Liaisons, Christopher Hampton, one feels his heart is not in this exercise. Watch Damage with Jeremy Irons to see this notion better realized.

Two great actresses... but are too prudish for the subject matter. The attraction is never truly explained. Romantic love. Pure Sexual desire Mid-life women need to be appreciated.Women who just can't let go of their sons.Beautifully shot, but still a sad story. The Doris Lessing short story should have stayed a short story. My husband and I watched this movie and completely fell in love again. What is age when love is involved? It's love all the same. It made us feel the depth of loving someone very strongly regardless of age. The characters were well matched. The scenery was absolutely perfect in creating the serenity and overall peacefulness that was achieved by these lovers. I have recommended this movie to my adult family and friends of all ages. I have now come to realize that loving adults should not be judged because they don't fall in the typical couple category. In this world of strife and hate, love should be realized by all regardless of age, race or sex. Where there is love, there shouldn't be pain.

This film is neither boring nor pointless, that there are people who see it this way, makes its importance even more clear. I did certainly not give the film such a high rating, because I am looking for love stories, but because there is an important point being made: it is falsely being said, that it is about the breaking of a taboo, the right thing to do is to make clear that there are no taboos here at all. Are we really still so behind in gender equality? It is not about incestuous intercourse between relatives, it is not about seduction of minors, it is about four grown-ups who find each other, and that they are cross-over related does not matter at all. If it were not the sons but the brothers of the women, then there would be the same great firestorm, I am sure, because what many reviewers seriously see as repulsive is the mere fact that the women are much older - so what ?? Biology (to put it in a corny way: the early loss of virility with age and the late flowering of female sensuality) even suggests that this way it makes all the more sense. And since the world is horribly overpopulated anyway, you do not need to bring the argument of childbearing. Fact: if disgusting old men lay their wrinkled hands on young women and girls, it is called normal, if the sexes are reversed (then the whole thing is not half as disgusting, but) it is called a scandal and repulsive etc.-why? Because men like to have it this way and the men determine everything and most women are so stupid and obey. Fact is also, that -as the film shows- (unfortunately) it is still unconventional, but just does not have to be nasty and that it is not better to act sensible/ in accordance with the social expectations and break up an intimacy and affection and attempt the conventional model instead – this way everybody will suffer in the end. And about the speculation whether Lil and Roz indirectly live out a lesbian relationship through the sons: it would not bother me if they were lesbian, but they are not, it is about an intimate connection, which they intensify/deepen by this cross-over relationship, not about indirect lesbian sex - fortunately not everything is about sex! Conclusion: relevant issue, as it is still a "taboo" / an inequality between women and men - for silly, vain reasons. -> No breach of taboo since there is no taboo just deep affection which is being sacrificed for social conventions which makes everybody unhappy.
