Despite the roots of the original, this remake is not the typical american remake of a Japanees paranormal horror movie, but more like 'grown up paranormal thriller' (a sort of thriller we saw a lot during this decade, that just like the true Japanees remakes, I consider to be essential for the evolution that would become the modern horror movie of today) . It does not mean in anyway that I did not enjoy this one. En contraire. I just changed my chips and coke for some red wine and french cheese and let this dark waterfall come over me.Though no true scary movie, in a dark room with a large tv screen and a surround system, this one quickly got a hold on me. It was actually starting to become equal as frightening as sad towards the end. The morbid atmosphere of this movie is the sort you often find in scandinavian crime thrillers. Everything is dark: the setting, the lightening, the clothes of the characters and ofcourse the whole story itself. It could had been a stephen king novel, the sort he wrote during his high days in the late 70s. I guess this is because of subplot becoming one with the main plot as the movie goes along.I wont give you any spoilers, but I can tell you 3 more things: 1) Jennifer Connelly was at her best in this move, if you like her you need to have this one. 2) I am usaually satisfied with any horror or thriller movie having a rating on this site more then 5/10, but in this cas it is a hunge underestimation. I have watched many many movies with higher ratings being not so good as this one. 3) This is not to move to watch with your mates with popcorn. Watch it alone or with two of you, in the dark, with the volume up and let this one go straight to your heart. This is a movie you will remember.

Excellent, but Somewhat Familiar Psychological Thriller that is an Exercise in Emotional Breakdown in an Unfriendly World. Jennifer Connelly Leads a Great Cast of Character Actors with an Outstanding Performance from Aerial Dadane as the Daughter. This was Marketed as a Horror Film and Disappointed a Lot of Fans with its Slow Burn and Atmospherics. But it is Nonetheless and Engaging Film that Draws You In with its Creepy and Gloomy Cityscape and a Building that has a Disturbing Personality of its Own.The Movie is Made in the Roman Polanski Tradition for Adults. The Supernatural Elements are Included for Some Scares, but it is the Real Life Horrors that Truly Make this a Disturbing Drama About Mental Illness, Child Abuse, and Abandonment.Overall, Recommended for Mature Thinkers that Like Their Horror More Intellectual than Physical. The Great Cast is a Standout and Director Walter Salles has Crafted a Film that was Not Well Received by Critics and was Released for a Target Audience that Showed It Nothing but Disdain. It's Better than That and is Definitely Worth a Watch.

For the story, eh, pretty basic, just another cliché about imaginary friends gone bad, a boring horror tale. However, the decrepit and industrial scenery was worth it. Through the film I was intrigued by the setting, the rotten old apartment, the red and white striped smokestacks at the power plant when the child gets onto the roof, the factories, the towers, the smog... the story was worth maybe a 3 out of 10, the scenery I'd give a 10 out of 10, so to even it out I rated Dark Waters with a 5. It was actually a remake of a Japanese version of the story. It seems to be in the same family as Orphan, the Ring, Hide & Seek, Fragile and Mirrors. Not a great movie but worth it for the factories, I love pollution! If you ever want to make a movie, head out to this place to film it!

Firstly I would not class this as a horror film as it has been advertised, it is more of a chilling thriller. The actors and actresses do a great job, but an absolutely excellent performance by the little girl - Ceci. What a wonderful little actress she is, she nailed every scene. And she is adorable. Being a single parent to a little girl, I related to this movie, the position Dahlia is put into and the struggles she comes across. However my life has never taken a sinister twist like hers. The ending was bittersweet and eerie. The creepiest part of the film is the little girl called Natasha. Who also did a great job as being the creepy little girl.I rooted for Dahlia all the way through, she was wronged many times and accused of absurd things, she was a wonderful mother - proved by the ending.I would recommend this film. I can't say that I would watch it myself again though.
