I enjoyed this. I didn't have to use much of my brain. Simple, silly and fun.

This is most likely how senior, retired citizens with a bit of money feel. If they have pets and yes the pets gets old too and they die, then comes an inexplicable sadness that can manifests itself in several ways. The loneliness during one's sunset years. Blythe Danner's done good . As Carol you can feel with her daily rut, being scared of a rat , playing cards with her ladies, and the attachment she feels when another lonely person comes her way and they form a bond even if just for a short time. It is a delightful dramedy, we're all going that way anyways and I'm just hoping that when my golden days dawn upon me, I'll look as good as Blythe Danner did in this film.

I wasted 2 hours of my life that I will NEVER get back after reading the reviews and then watching this vapid, dull, insipid movie. I kept waiting for something to happen. The script was rambling. There was NO theme. I can't believe that someone invested real money into making this pathetic movie. People just wander in and out of the scenes. There is no real character development. The characters have no depth. It is just a movie about old people breathing, walking and sleeping. Blythe Danner looks wonderful at her age but she needs a good hairdresser and stylist. Sam Elliott's place in her life had potential but, like everything else in this movie, the audience is left wanting. I'm still wondering why the pool guy returned later in the movie. The writers, producers and directors could have chosen a much better vehicle for Blythe Danner and Sam Elliott. If you have nothing else better to do with two hours of your life, you can watch this movie. But, if you have something more exciting to do, like sleeping, do that.

You see I am almost the same age as Blythe Danner so I have a really good appreciation for the themes in this movie. In real life Blythe Danner lost her husband Bruce Paltrow so she really has been and still is living the life of an older widow. In this movie she is Carol Petersen. She forms an unlikely friendship with the pool guy who is young enough to be her son. She sees him as a compatible friend, but he starts to see her as a possible love relationship. They both learn something. It isn't that unlikely because the actress in her early 70s is still quite graceful and good-looking, so when Bill (Sam Elliot) meets her it is easy to understand why he, seemingly a confirmed bachelor, is smitten.I would guess many of the younger crowd will (would) find this movie a bit boring but it really is a good examination of relationships once the "shine" has gone.A bonus, for me at least, was getting to see and hear Danner sing. It is not well known but early in life she became a trained vocalist and considered a career as a jazz singer before she settled on acting. She performs on stage in this movie and she really is good.
