Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.

It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

I'll start out by saying that this movie is not really worth watching. It's too bad because of all the great actors and actresses in it but it's just boring and doesn't provide any sort of joy. I'm not sure who wrote the movie but it appeared as though there was very little effort put into it. My kids didn't like it as well so I'm not really sure who the target audience is. Steve Carrell and Steve Buscemi are great actors but this just wasn't meant to be, they look out of place and are not very convincing that they are magicians. The only reason this movie was not an utter failure was because of Jim Carrey. Now this wasn't a Jim Carrey classic performance but it at least injected some comedy into a rather unfunny movie otherwise. I had high hopes seeing all the great actors in this movie but it was truly a dud, one that i will likely never watch again. 5/10.

The core idea of this movie - two washed-up individuals struggling to make a big comeback - is a sound one, even though it's been done by many other films before. Though being about magicians does give this telling some freshness. The supporting cast members come off the best, giving some much needed life to the movie and a few chuckles. Though it's Jim Carrey (an actor I normally can't stand) who delivers the biggest laughs of the movie, with his Criss Angel- like character taken to some hilarious extremes. Most of the movie, however, focuses on the Steve Carell character, and that's where there's a big problem. Carell's character for most of the movie is very off-putting and unlikable, and because of that, most of his scenes are simply not very funny. In fact, much of the rest of the movie isn't that funny; there's a surprisingly low energy feeling for the most part, where it seems that everyone involved was afraid to get really silly. This is most evident at the climax, which should have been zanier and over the top in nature. As I said, there are some chuckles and even a few genuine laughs, but for the most part this is a movie you watch with silence for the most part. It passes the time, but you'll forget about it a few hours afterwards.

If like me, you are in your mid thirties or older, you probably remember comedies like "the Burbs" and "Fletch Lives". This movie is reminiscent of lets 80's/early 90's titles like those. And I think that is a good thing! It doesn't rely on an endless tirade of d**k and gay jokes, like pretty much every other comedy released in recent years. Let's face it, anything with the names "Seth Rogen" or "Danny McBride" on the cast list have been guaranteed to be one long penis joke set to a backdrop of repressed homosexuality. (It's getting old guys!) A lot of the humor is subtle, probably why a generation of people spoon- fed reality TV don't git it. It does also have it's sillier moments though, but they work in the context of the movie. Steve Carell is on top form and delivers a sleazy but still likable performance. Special mention should also go to Olivia Wilde, who pulls off some great humorous moments, her inability to walk in heels at the beginning is a nice touch. Jim Carey too goes somewhat against his usual "crazy" character and plays a self obsessed David Blaine-esq "street magician" (his drill 'trick' had me in fits of laughter - taa daa!)If you are looking for a comedy that has subtly, heart and some old fashioned silliness, then this could be the movie for you. If not, I'm sure the hangover part 100 will be out soon.

OK, only part way through flick, but is it supposed to be a comedy? I see two main characters are comedian type actors, but so far haven't seen anything humorous. Possibly my age is a factor, but I have found humor in W.C. fields's work and as far as 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force', so, perhaps this is a life time movie of the week? My review is ; "really?" And, "why".OK, as a bonus, "sad".May we ask our selves why a review has to be ten lines? And, why do we think this movie kind/type of comedy is "funny"'? I have no answer, sorry.
