Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies

The message of this inspirational film is to never give up and no matter what situation comes to you, you can always overcome it. Bethany Hamilton is challenged with learning how to do the tough and the basic things with one arm. Throughout the film, there are negative barriers especially soon after the attack. People perceived Bethany as less than or as incapable but Bethany as refuses to give up, she proves that she is capable of doing anything though she may have to take different approaches. Bethany demonstrates this through surfing. Soul Surfer is a such a inspirational film, not just for teenage girls but for everyone to show that one should never give up their passions and dreams just because of an occurrence.

This movie is heavy on the cheese and has a very Disney feel to it yet despite that I still really enjoyed it. Excellent cast in Helen Hunt & Dennis Quaid which probably helped and several surprising cameos (Craig T. Nelson, Carrie Underwood) along with a nice virtual vacation as it takes place exclusively in Hawaii.Soul Surfer is the real life story of Bethany Hamilton, a teen surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack and through faith and the support of her parents courageously overcame the odds to become a champion surfer again. The whole shark attack scene could have been a bit more... well just more. Dramatized I guess, a lost opportunity there but I guess they were trying to keep things family friendly. The ensuing chaos as they (including Kevin Sorbo) try to get her back onto land and to the hospital in the back of a pick-up is well done though. We then follow Bethany as she adjusts to her new life and attempts a comeback at championship surfing.I understand the family is quite religious in real life so I think they probably toned down that aspect here, still a heavy Christian vibe. Not that there's anything wrong with that. 08.13

This is the real life story of 13 year-old champion surfer Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) who loses her arm from a shark attack. This is definitely a feel-good inspirational story. It's about over coming the odds, and belief in God.And it achieves that, but it doesn't make for a compelling drama. Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid are veterans doing a competent job as her parents. Carrie Underwood is distracting as her Christian adviser. It would better to have an actual actor in the role. She seems uncomfortably cheerful. Anna Sophia Robb is a solid actor, but nothing dramatic. If there's any tension, it must come from the competition. However it's just not set up well enough. They needed to elevate a competitor as a lead character. But they chose not to pump up the drama.

"Soul Surfer" is a based-on-fact film about the life of Bethany Hamilton, an optimistic, blissful young girl who rode lots of waves, lost an arm, and rode lots of waves some more. Back in 2003, when she was just thirteen years old, Bethany's left arm was bitten off by a shark. Now she is a champion surfer, renowned in her field of sport and admired by people worldwide who share similar disabilities. What we have here is an incredible, inspirational story that's overshadowed by lazy, uninspired movie-making. In "Soul Surfer", Bethany's life has been reduced to formula, filtered through a lens of familiarization. The raw power of her story becomes covered with so much bland, Hollywood melodrama that very little of it makes is retained in the final product. Aaron Ralston should be pleased with what Danny Boyle did with his story; "127 Hours" was one of the best movies of 2010. However, if I was Bethany Hamilton, I'm not so sure if I would be pleased with what Sean McNamara did to my story. There is the distraction of another surfer named Malina. She appears in the same competitions that Bethany participates in. She is that character who is selfish, and mean, and willing to play dirty if that's what it takes to win. Malina is only here to fill the role of a villain in a movie that doesn't need one. Is there really room for a character like her in a film dedicated to Bethany Hamilton? Another problem is the dialogue. Because the movie's aim is to inspire, we understand it for engaging in its epiphanies and being vocal about them. The mistake is in the decision to prolong them. It extends simple insights into lecture's length, as if we need extra space to get its point.Read more here: http://localmoviereview.com/soul-surfer-movie-review/
