I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

This movie opened my eyes to the dreamy, seducing world of filmography, after I watched this movie i engulfed myself into obsessing over ever film critics were buzzing about or had buzzed about. Now to the actual movie, Zodiac is a movie, no more of an experience that takes you through the real life's of Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr) and Dave Tocshi (Mark Ruffalo), and there willingness to crack the code and find the killer. I don't want to say anymore, and now all I have to say is if you call yourself a film lover or enthusiast you must see this movie.

Zodiac is by far one of my most favorite film of all time and I always consider that this is by far the best film of David Fincher. I also think that this is one of the best non-fiction film. There is a lot of things to praise on this film but first the summary of the film. SUMMARY: This film is all about the real case of the Zodiac killer who killed in the San Francisco Bay Area at some time around the late 1960's and early 1970's and the investigation and the manhunt that came along with it. It also follows the journey of Robert Graysmith (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), a cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle who got interested in the case and tried to investigate it. This film is based-off of the 1986 book "Zodiac" that was written by Robert Graysmith. Everything about this film works. The cinematography, performances, pacing, direction, just everything. In fact, I think this is far better than the another film of Fincher that is also one of my favorite which is Seven (1995). Fincher grew more subtle in the years and you can tell that when you watch Zodiac. It's not some they will just shootout all of a sudden, cheesy car chase scenes, etc.. The film is actually almost true to it's original source. It's a real investigation film about a serial killer. In fact, it's not so much about the Zodiac killer but is about the obsession of the leading actors to search for the Zodiac killer. Speaking of leading actors, best performances by Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downer, Jr. and especially by Jake Gyllenhaal. They were great at this film as you can tell. The direction is also great, David Fincher is one of my most favorite directors of all time. But the best thing about this film is its pacing and its cinematography. This might not work for some other people, some might complain the pacing is too slow or very methodical. It's because the film takes its time and it doesn't just rush it all. Personally, I found the pacing of this film great, it makes me feel also obsessed of finding out the identity of the Zodiac killer. The cinematography is mesmerizing, it almost feels hypnotic. The cinematography of Harris Savides is a great thing. Another thing to praise is the use of visual effects and CGI (computer-generated imagery). Fincher wanted to be this film to be as accurate as much as possible even the setting of this film. The visual effects of this film feels seamless, I didn't even doubt that there was CGI involved and when I found out that they actually used CGI, I was shocked. The music of this film is also great, it's very subtle. It's overall a great film and is definitely a must-watch film. I think this is the one of the best masterpiece of all time.

I remember watching this for the first time a few years ago thinking it was an unmemorable slow drag. Revisiting this was an excellent idea. Why? Well my opinion has changed. Based on the Zodiac killings of California back in the late 60s, a journalist, cartoonist and homicide detective are entangled in a seemingly uncrackable case. With each murder, the killer leaves a cryptic message behind for the San Fransisco Chronicle to publish. On the surface this is a dark crime mystery, however underneath the authentic 60s production value is a story about obsession. How it can manifest and manipulate your mind, turning yourself into a determined individual but at the cost of losing your job, friends and family. These three employees became so fixated on publicising The Zodiac and attempting to uncover the suspect behind the codes, that actually it became a detriment to them. The lavish direction from renowned director David Fincher illustrated the case as if we, the viewers, were apart of the team. The evidence was meticulously presented so that we could attempt to work it out ourselves, which is where the thrills and emotional investment come into play. The slow paced story allowed the characters to truly interact with each other and become fully developed, thus conveying the concept of obsession enigmatically. Gyllenhaal, Ruffalo and Downey Jr had a fair share of screen time where each of the three acts focussed on one character in greater detail, whilst still progressing the case in a linear narrative. Not a easy task, but Fincher made it look effortless. The basement scene towards the end was heart pounding, Fincher did not need to conform to typical thriller traits to create suspense. The constant time hopping between scenes prevented a narrative flow, it felt disconnected occasionally. One day later, one year later, seven and a half years later...we get it, the case went on for a long time. Despite being a slow burner, this mystery will keep you glued to the screen. Taut, tense and thrilling!
