It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
I couldn't have been less interested in this franchise, completely dumbfounded as to why they were trying to make sense out of an intentionally non-sensical world. This sequel continues that journey into unneeded clarity, though with better results. Maybe I was just more prepared for what was to come, but I also think it has decent emotional arcs and cool visual ideas, despite Depp's lazy performance and way too much plot.
I loved the 1st one, so the other day I bought the Blu-ray of this one, because I never saw it. Simply put: If an 8 year old was told to write this script, and then an adult came along and corrected the grammar and spelling errors, but left everything else the child wrote 'as is', the result would be this script. Now, to add spice to the mix, get a 5 year old to direct it, and a 6 year old to edit it. "This movie would be the result of that plan". If my name was Linda Woolverton, I would commit suicide, rather than admit my name was Linda Woolverton. If my name was James Bobin, I would ban myself from Hollywood for eternity, and then commit suicide.I'm not rating the movie, because there is nothing lower than a 1 I can rate it here. It deserves a minus 10. I fell asleep 4 times while trying to watch this 'thing'. 3 times from boredom, and the 4th time from attempting suicide on myself for having purchased this Blu-ray.
Despite the special effects being sometimes great and other times 'meh', Alice Through the Looking Glass surprised me a lot! It's very funny, light and pleasant to watch. Once again we saw Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter carry the movie but Mia Wasikowska is a lot better than before.. her acting is really good in this one. The meanings about Time and Family are really well done in almost every possible way.. the 'cause and effect' is on point. Really good movie.
Having used the books by Lewis Carroll for the first film there's really nowhere for this sequel (an unneeded one at that) to go in terms of plot.It manages to cobble something together, that is equally as nonsensical as anything Carroll dreamed up, but apart from some big names popping up in their roles from last time (Anne Hathaway, Johnny Depp) there is a strong sense throughout that this is a sequel for the sake for a sequel.I'm not saying the Tim Burton directed first part was a masterpiece, but at least it was grounded on something more solid.
