This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

My wife and I watched this movie at home on DVD from our public library.I have always been a big Charlize Theron fan, ever since I first saw her in 1998's 'Mighty Joe Young'. She was a producer for this movie and, in the lead role, gained 50 pounds to make the character authentic. She is really great here in a difficult role. Here she is Marlo, she and her husband are also best friends, but as often happens he can't quite relate to her task of taking care of two young children, and on top of that she is very pregnant and about to deliver their new daughter. As we watched the story develop, and Marlo gets a night nurse, Tully, who comes in at bedtime and takes care of the baby, the story seems to be taking a very strange twist. At the height of that strangeness Tully talks Marlo into driving into New York City for drinks at night after the baby and her husband are asleep. When the story resolves itself completely it all makes sense, the overall thrust is how what we commonly know as postpartum depression can affect a busy mother. From the same writer that gave us "Juno" and "Young Adult."

The movie continually reminds Tully's otherworldly nature, all the time. No one else ever sees Tully, but then, in Tully's final act, things start to get weirder and weirder. Much of what does work is owed to Theron and Davis's stunning performances. Theron, in particular, is simply impressive, physically and acting wise also; as Tully enters her life and begins to help her out, Theron communicates the relief effortlessly. Davis, who long ago demonstrated her versatility in other projects (such as Halt, Catch Fire, Black Mirror and Always Shine) threads the needle on a character that should either be infuriating or preposterous (or both!), making Tully enchanting and mysterious. Overall the story works properly.

I'll watch anything Charlize Theron does so I am on her side. This movie is interesting in it's depiction of the difficulty of tending to a new baby and running a household with other young kids. The night nanny thing is illuminating to watch. But the drama at the end is contrived and unnecessary. The accident could have been clearer. Also the thing with the waitress uniform and the husband is really dumb.A for effort from Charlize to be that overweight mom but it can't be good for her health to gain weight like that. If they needed a heavier actress for the role why didn't they just use one who was already like that.

This is a beautifully acted, well written film. I believe some people who disliked it were expecting a comedy and therefore disappointed. It seems more a psychological drama about a woman who is so sleep deprived, stressed out and unsupported by her spouse, she actually creates a nanny (her younger self) to help her cope. I liked it, much as I liked the Sixth Sense. Somewhere along the line, you have to see the clues. Bruce Willis character is dead and Tully isn't real. Tully, we find out later in the film, is Marlo's maiden name, when she arrives she is much younger than expected, they hit it off like best pals despite the age difference, Marlo said she didn't want a stranger in the house at night and yet she trusts this young girl immediately, her husband doesn't even go downstairs to meet the nanny, when the car crashes into the water Marlo is alone in the car....there are endless clues that Tully doesn't exist. I hope the fine acting is remembered at Oscar time.
